1938 FUND CAMPAIGN OPENED WITH MESSAGE TO 18,000 ALUMNI;PRESIDENT HOPKINS DELIVERS ADDRESS AT VIRGINIA

With the mailing of President Hopkins' message to nearly 18,000 alumni on April the 1938 Alumni Fund campaign was officially opened. The President's interpretation of Dartmouth's present-day role, entitled College Responsibilities in Modernlife, was accompanied by a brief message from the Alumni Fund Committee of the Alumni Council, headed this year by SigUrd S. Larmon '14 of New York City. Previous to this initial mailing piece, organization for the 1938 campaign had been perfected with the setting up of class committees and with the holding of record-breaking dinners for class agents of the New York, Boston and Chicago areas.

For this year's Fund campaign, which extends to June 30, an objective of $110,000 has been set. This is the same figure which was set for last year and which was very nearly realized with total contributions of $106,847.16, It is expected that the total of Fund contributors will go beyond the 8,000 mark this year for the first time in Fund history. During the 1937 campaign 7.942 alumni contributed, creating a new high total and coming within one per cent of the percentage records of 1926 and 1927 when the proportion of contributors to graduates was 73 per cent. Before the Fund officially opened on April 15 the money on hand to be credited toward the 1938 total was substantially larger than the amount on hand at the corresponding time last year and individual givers were on the average slightly bettering their 1937 gifts.

The record-breaking attendance of 76 class agents at the New York dinner on April 6 came as a climax to the highly successful gatherings in Chicago and Boston, where 50 and 56 agents were present, respectively. As in previous years, the class agents and their assistants will take over major responsibility for the 1938 Fund. It is believed that the Fund has a good chance this year to reach its objective for the first time since 1928.

In addition to Mr. Larmon as chairman, the 1938 Alumni Fund Committee is made up of Albert I. Dickerson '30, executive secretary; Luther S. Oakes '99 of Minneapolis, Minn.; Edward K. Robinson '04 Of Boston; Fletcher R. Andrews '16 of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and Sumner B. Emerson '17 of New York City. Having made its opening appeal through the mailing of April 15, the Committee will pass active direction of the campaign over to 'he class agents and will make a final appeal peal on June 10 to those who haven't contributed by that date.

A repeated feature of the 1938 Fund campaign will be the cartoons of Theodor S. Geisel '25 (Dr. Seuss), who has contributed drawings for several years and who this past month added two new cartoons to the Dr. Seuss Alumni Fund library.

RICHARD E. PRITCHARD '14 President of the Alumni Council, of NewBritain, Conn., reelected from New England States District.
