A FOUR-DAY CONFERENCE on Inter-American Relations was sponsored by Dartmouth College in Hanover on November 21 to 24. The program, under the chairmanship of Prof. Jose M. Arce of the Romance Languages department, constituted one of the first steps by an American college to study and improve relations among the Americas.
The conference was opened with a public address by Ellis O. Briggs '2l of the Division of the American Republics, Department of State. He spoke on "The Impact of European Hostilities on Inter-American Relations." A public lecture the following evening was delivered by Hubert Herring, director of the Committee on Cultural Relations with Latin America, on the subject "The United States Takes Account of the Americas." He also conducted the public seminar on November 23 on the topic of "The Land Reform of Mexico."
The closing event of the conference was a luncheon seminar conducted by Prof. Frank Tannenbaum of the History department of Columbia University. At this session "Foreign Trade Prospects and the Industrialization of Latin America" was the topic, with Mr. Herring presenting the concluding remarks. The luncheon was attended by a number of invited faculty guests from New England colleges and universities.
Another gathering at the College during the past month was the meeting of ophthalmologists of New Hampshire and Vermont, who met on November 4 and 5 as guests of the Dartmouth Eye Institute of the Dartmouth Medical School. A few special guests from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Providence, and Montreal were also in attendance. Speakers during the two-day program included Prof. Adelbert Ames Jr., Prof. Alfred Bielschowsky, Dr. Herman M. Burian, Leo F. Madigan, and Prof. Kenneth N. Ogle, all of the Dartmouth Eye Institute. The ophthalmological meetings were held in Choate House, into which the research division of the Institute has recently moved, leaving the whole of the Webster Avenue building to the clinical division.
