Comes spring—and with the melting snows come the duck-boards to Hanover. By the time this column gets out the duckboards will have been taken up again, the trees will start to bloom, and Hanover will have begun to take on the freshness and loveliness which we all remember and love so well. However, after just returning from our annual college recruiting trip, the sign of the duck-boards made us think back-the eight long years since the class of '3l balanced itself on these same boards. It was good to be back-even for the short space of two days. The group of coming graduates impressed us with their sense of balance and their sound and practical outlook toward the problems they are heading into when they graduate in June. With the exception of many of the lovely trees which have been blown down by the hurricane, it is still the same grand old spot. We saw the Big Green hockey team take over the Red Bellies (Harvards) in fine fashion to win the Quadrangular League Championship and to place themselves in the position of possibly being the first American college team to win the International League crown. The team looked fine, and are a continuing credit to Ed Jeremiah, their coach.
Swinging down from Hanover, we spent a day in Boston and an evening with Ned Kent and Marjorie. They are most happy together, and as previously recorded have a fine new home at 26 Emerson Road in Wellesley Hills. Ned says he heard from the Fishers in St. Louis and that they made their move out there in good shape and are comfortably located. They expected to find Gray Magee, but learned that he had recently received a fine promotion and has moved to 2005 Washington St., Alton, 111.
At the present writing we're waiting in our hotel room at the Benjamin Franklin here in Philadelphia for Vance Dickerman to appear and give us some news about the local contingent.
A memorandum on some change of addresses:
Edmund B. Sutton, Mayo Foundation as a Fellow in Urology, Rochester, Minn.
That looks like a nice assignment, Ed, congratulations. It takes a good man to get an appointment to Mayo.
Charles S. Marx, Ford dealer, go W. Palisade Ave., Englewood, N. J.
Take note, any of youse guys that want to trade in the old wagon for one of those bright new stream-lined jobs.
Arthur G. Marx, Treas.—Atlantic Knitting Mills, Inc., 131 W. 36th St., New York City.
Another addition to the growing ranks of '3l's business executives—congratulations, Art!
Speaking of '3l's executives, here's a picture in the Manchester Union of Atty. William L. Phinney with the title "New Racing Czar" and the story: "William L. Phinney—well known young Manchester attorney and a former special agent of the Department of Justice under J. Edgar Hoover, was appointed chairman of the State Racing Commission by the Governor and Council. Mr. Phinney was chairman of the Manchester Murphy for Governor Committee during the recent election campaign." That's grand. Bill, and we all congratulate you on your appointment. It looks as though you have a real job on your hands and have been given a real honor.
More changes in address— J. Robert Chapman, 164 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, 111.
Francis V. Gorman, proprietor of West Elm Variety Store, 139 W. Elm Ave., Wollaston, Mass. and
Charles A. Schneider, Hope Windows, Inc., 101 Park Ave., New York City.
Sounds like an interesting change, Charlie. How's to let us hear about it.
Still no news from Dickerman, so we'll have to go to press without the Philadelphia report.
When in Hanover, I learned that this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE was to go to every member in our class. When each of you sees the column, I'm sure you'll feel as I do and wish that we could have lots more news about many, many more fellows. If some of you will unlimber and shoot something along, we'll do our best to make it interesting.
Last month, we warned you that Beany and the Alumni Fund were going into action. The starting gun in the campaign for Alumni Funds is about to be fired, so get ready to dig out some of those bucks you've been saving and be all set to shoot a check to him on the first day. Might as well do it then and get it off your mind.
