THE DARTMOUTH CLUB of Hartford deserves a big hand for staging on April 5th the second of the two largest and most enthusiastic meetings which have ever been held there. An out-pouring of over 110 members and guests tied on the feed bag at the Hartford Golf Club, interspersing stuffing with singing. Prof. Al Foley '20 spoke entertainingly on the topic "Dartmouth Changing, Yet Unchanged." Jack Cumming '39, chairman of the Palgopitus committee in charge of alumni relationships, told of the committee's commendable work. Colored carnival movies, 1939 version, taken by Mr. William Goeben were shown and were well nigh perfect from an artistic and photographic standpoint.
Bridgeport also may well boast of the movies which it sponsored at the University Club in March, consisting of Dick Durrance's own films taken by him in the summer of 1937 on the New Zealand trip in the company of several other Dartmouth stars. University Club members were invited guests, most of whom were Yale men, many of them amateur skiers, and much good-will was exuded through the medium of constant ohs and ahs as picture after picture of thrilling ski rides by Durrance at als were reeled off.
Movies seem to occupy the spotlight these days and in keeping with this sign of the times the New Britain faithful gathered at the Hotel Burritt on Dartmouth night to view pictures of present day Dartmouth life, featuring skiing. Phil Pelletier '15 discussed the work of the Secretaries Association and Dick Pritchard '14, president of the Alumni Council, spoke on the selective system.
While bouquets are the order for this month, it is fitting to present a large one to Stamford which sponsored a Glee ClubBarbary Coast concert on Mar. 30. Twelve hundred paying customers flocked to the Stamford auditorium to see and hear the Glee Club together with the co-sponsor, the Apollo Glee Club of Stamford, give a most interesting program. It was one of the season's largest audiences and bespeaks the enthusiasm of the Dartmouth Club of Western Conn., which did a marvelous job of promotion and incidentally, did the coffers swell!
The New Haven Club met on Dartmouth night at the Woodbridge Country Club. A culinary treat consisting of an oyster supper spread by Eric Ball '18 and a more intellectual repast supplied by Davis Jackson '36 discussing the fraternity situation and other pertinent College news made the evening successful gastronomically and otherwise.
Bridgeport tries something new Wed., Apr. 12, with N. J. Howland '09 speaking at a supper meeting on Foreign Affairs. Twenty-four years of living in Central Europe must have developed a viewpoint keen and stimulating, and a really valuable evening is in store.
The State meeting is now nearer by a month—to repeat: the date, May 24; place, Brooklawn Country Club, Bridgeport. The program headliners as completed is one of the best ever to grace a Connecticut banquet board. Here they are, Craven Laycock '96, Dean Robert Strong '24 and Whit Miller '30, captain-elect of football, varsity skier and president of his class. Connecticut will have at least 200 present. How about out of staters coming up or clown. It will be one fine evening, from the dinner gong at 6:30 on, and on and on.
