George W. Yates '24, published by William Morrow ir Co., 1939. $2.00. p. 303. Locale, rural New Jersey. A charming sophisticated lady from New York City stumbles over a corpse near an isolated junction. Mistaken identity. A queer family group stubbornly defend each other. Traditionally stupid local police bungle with their customary brutal methods. A rich uncle, a gambler, a gin guzzling chorus girl, and a window peeping old crone serve a props for a most complicated mystery. Enter Mr. Hazlitt Woar, English of course, with his inevitable pipe, mackintosh, and bottle of Scotch—Mr. Yates new Sherlock. Private investigator Woar has no easy time unused to American customs fighting his lonely battle of wits with the local coppers, and at the most inopportune time barely cheating the grim reaper by recovering almost too quickly from an attack of influenza. But Woar gets his man and his woman too. The man of course is the sought for murderer, but the woman, lovely Kathern Meynard, becomes Mrs. Woar. Only by this unique maneuver can our newly created detective continue his craft on American soil which apparently Mr. Yates prefers for his future crimes. If you want the maximum enjoyment from reading "The Body That Was't Uncle" we suggest that you first read "The Body That Came By Post" by which Detective Woar was first introduced to the mystery reading world.
