Parker Melvin was elected president of the Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association at the 17th annual convention of the association in September, an important honor as 'l7's other oil men point out. This follows close on Mel's appointment last spring, by Governor James, as Pennsylvania's official observer on the Interstate Oil Compact Commission. Here are excerpts from the story published by The Oil and GasJournal under a picture of Mel: "Parker Melvin is president of Towne-Melvin Oil Co., Bradford, Pa., and one of that field's most active operators. Pennsylvania is not a member of the Commission, but producers in the country's first oil state are vitally interested in what it does. Mr. Melvin entered the oil industry as a producer in the Bradford field in 1919, in time to participate in the intensive development of that area by water flooding. During the intervening years his interests have broadened, and in addition to heading the Towne-Melvin Oil Co., he is a partner in Matson, Towne 8c Melvin, operating in Kansas. He is a director and past president of the Bradford District Oil Producers' Ass'n., and a director and member of the executive committee of the Independent Petroleum Ass'n. of America."
Mel went into the business shortly after his return from overseas and his discharge as 2nd Lieutenant in the 303 rd Artillery. He and Freda have three daughters: Marian at nineteen is a Skidmore sophomore; Ruth, fifteen, and Betty, thirteen, are in school at Bradford. Mel rounds up Burt Gale and Barney Thielscher every once in a while in Buffalo.
