It's unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable! Only 2 years until our 5th Reunion —2 short years, you can be sure. Three have quickly passed—even now we each wonder: What will 1942 bring; where will I be on that GREAT JUNE DAY; will I ride in from White River alone or as the proud escort for the loveliest lady in all the world? One day, not so long ago, Malcolm -Merritt was pondering over these things; he began to write: "Because the wake of time is straight, Straight as the die we cast, The years that come collaborate With years so lately past."
And so we begin to think, to remember, to look around, and best of all to dream of the future—for we've a heritage that won't let us down. THE PROOF?. .. .Listen: "Bud Wood is healthy, and I am growing fat on a stock-boy's wages." (Dex Smith) "There are pretty authentic rumors that Dick Chase will have an asst. professorship in the Eng. dept. of Columbia next year.". .. ."Ernie Jr. surprised us with 2 teeth at 4 months, should be walking in another couple, can't delay much longer in starting to provide for his education." Papa April now the friend of man as an employee of J. Hancock Mut. Life and is most happy Louis Valier (Tahiti): "difficult to send my check for the gift directly to you from here, even tho' it be money in an American bank.
Therefore, I'm asking my father to send you the check for my account." An invitation reads: "Sally Gooding and Don Pease, May 18th, The Church of Christ at Dartmouth College, Reception at the D.O.C. House."—Gosh!. .. .Then there's ONE CLASSMATE TO ANOTHER: "Feel like letting loose an intelligent blast against that crack-pot pseudo-intelligence of yours."....A little closer, please, we can't let this out—it's almost too good. ... our ANCHOR MAN, Big Mort, was found rejoicing: "The Fund is off to a good start this year. We're well ahead of last spring " The Verdict, gentlemen of the jury, lies with you—with each one of you!
"Diapers Washed, Sterilized and Fluff Dried "I'm in this temporarily until a teaching job shows up. Only have a half year to go before the requirement of two years experience has been met. Will be in Lynn during July and August finishing up and coaching at one of the high schools in the fall." (His first name is Tony). Would it be wrong, to tell you now of ROMEO and JULIET? In Cohasset, Mass., on April 27th Sally Anderson Reck of Vesper George School '37 joined our merry band as Mrs. John Lovely, M.I.T. —M.A., "at home, 97 Summer St., Spring- field, Vt." One fortnight earlier in nearby Newbury, Vt. the bells spoke of Dick Moore and Chaire Paddleford. Best man Don Bauer—fresh from skiing and McGill. Dick's with the Amer. Guernsey Cattle Club. On the 17th of June, Sid Lansburgh and Helen Brylawski of Wash., D. C. 8c Goucher College '4O will make certain that neither travels the long road alone. The bashful groom's with Lionel D. Edie & Cos., New York City, general investment counsel and industrial consultants—in the research dept. Squam Lake's in the center of N. H. Could there be a more fitting place for the wedding of Briggs Austin & Alice Howe, Vassar '39? Date is June 24, following which Briggs has reserved a special section at the N. Y. Fair in the Kodak Exhibit for youse gents and gal's what read this. And still they come! Art Kenyon's engaged to Nancy B. Beckwith of West Hartford—Aetna Fire Ins. is behind them. Margaret Robinson of Mill's School & Wheelock's Sch. and daughter of John Robinson (Honorary Degree in '§9) saw our class through all 12 parties, often going hungry at the Theta Delt Hse. —Dominic Griffin's her chef to be.
Chicago—What of it? they cry! Old Don Cob made 'em weep, and beat—their sides with laughter. They were all there: Fred & Wilma Castle from Decatur, Ill. where F. C. is the head man for Kemper Ins., and Gail—police reporter for City PressCompton with Fred Asher and their lovely wives, the others you've heard from of late. CLEVELAND'S typical: "Our class roster cut considerably due to transfers and the like. Also the married boys are hard to get out because they still seem to like to stick close to the fireside and also probably have to watch the old budget pretty closely. Then there are 2 cases where they are anxiously awaiting the stork. You can't blame them for that." You bet we can't! There'll come a day when we'll be proud of the young'unsBud Reed continues: "Later in the month (May) there'll be dinner, entertainment, beer picnic." Our mighty squadron in New York City still holds its own—a few new shots from their April Dinner: J. Coggeshall's with Master Waterproofers, Inc. Rog. Allen—Gulf Oil Co., Roily KentGen. Motors Overseas, H. W. BrownMcCoaring Hosiery Mills, Ed. Davis—Nat'l Export Advertising Service, Ted Jenkins —Nat'l City Bank, and the rest would be old. .. .except Wild Bill Geraghty recently returned from successful Hanover trip for Lord 8c Taylor's—quite a feeling, interviewing Dartmouth Seniors.
Jim Humphrey (Mont.) was in the Dartmouth Club of New York City recently: "I enjoyed my visit very much because the Hanover atmosphere is there, and is emphasized in contrast to the rather foreign, fast paced, close mouthed crowds on the streets of that city. I enjoyed staying this short while in a little oasis of old Morgan interior decoration "Everett Dearman was there too, all wrapped up in General Foods There's much to tell you guys always. Park Butler in 'Hamp sells flowers wholesale—branches in Miami & Palm Beach. Paul McCombs sells cheese (Kraft) out of Portland. Loring Stinson sells screens (Porter Screen Cos.) in Burlington, Vt. and Bob Dunham "Branched out into investment brokerage business, but expect to be in soft fruit deal this summer—also do insurance adjusting and work for Dun & Bradstreet." Bill Oneal (ex) is finishing Med. School in June and can be found this summer in New York City, c/o M. Merritt.
THIS beautiful JUNE DAY must mean a lot to many—to most of us, in fact: "I'll never regret spending the 4 years there, even if I do end up as foreman on a W.P.A. project. They can't take away those 4 years from the best part of my life." Jim Humphrey said: "It may sound a bit trite to write that you went bowling with a classmate and that it was a lot of fun, but it was like going to Dartmouth again and bowling, and it seems like a long time that I went there." A card from Sey Ochsner recommends Rauschning's Revolution of Nihilism and closes with, "I'm in relatively fine fettle, tho' that cold set me back a bit—but a 'bit' doesn't seem bad after you have become used to a lot."
Bill Greenwood's taken over in great shape DOWN PHILLY WAY-in spite of the column's attempts to place him in various cities and occupations that he never dreamed of. The Punch Bowl Party you've heard of—and you know that the Dartmouth delegation is virtually running the medical fraternities at Penn. (Bill Bennett, e.g., is a prexy), but about Bill Greenwood his own self: "Local com- munity fund drive; chairman in charge of the solicitors covering northwest Philad. Since July '38, just out of Tuck, have been with the Provid. Mutual Life. At present, after working in all the other depts., I'm in the investment section."
North Shore D. Club Dinner (Boston): "Ed Loveday in leather game and quite absorbed with labor troubles. Freddie Mayo's back in Wellesley. Stan Lappin's still with Filene's and Bill Hoyt with Jay's. Albie Chester's off for New York to make his first million with McCall Refrigerators.
AND SO THE THIRD YEAR ENDS. No blaze of glory shines down upon us; nor do we grope blindly in any fog of pessimism. We are surrounded on every side by partisan statement, rumor, and propaganda. Let us profit by the teachings of Dartmouth and in a world of confusion retain our balance.
"The Dartmouth years supplying Our strength to stand alone; The Dartmouth years undying Are bred into the bone." (M. M.)
