To PREPARE THEMSELVES for summer jobs as camp counselors and naturalists, thirty Dartmouth undergraduates have taken a special non-credit course this spring under Dr. Richard Weaver, College Naturalist. It was largely a methods course, showing how to use natural history knowledge gained through regular Biology courses, previous camp experience, or field work with Dr. Weaver.
A series of nine lectures was given in the evenings, while laboratory work was arranged by the students to fit into their regular schedules. General topics covered by the course were nature photography, nature trails and museums, nature games and campfire programs, life history problems and natural history record-keeping, simple taxidermy, and the care of live animals and wildflower gardens.
The men who have completed the course with Dr. Weaver are being recommended for positions as nature counselors in camps, hotels, parks and field schools throughout New England. One member of the group will serve as Naturalist this summer at the Moosilauke Summit Camp.
