THE FIRST MEETING of an advisory committee of Dartmouth alumni who are attorneys in the New York metropolitan area was held at the Dartmouth Club on April 16. Roswell Magill '16 acted as chairman and Laurence W. Lougee '29 as secretary. Halsey S. Edgerton '06, Treasurer of the College, and William J. Minsch '07, Alumni Trustee and director of the gifts and endowment activity sponsored by the Alumni Council, were speakers.
In discussion during the evening it) was decided that a directory of the 250 Dartmouth lawyers in New York would be printed and distributed to the entire group. It was further decided that no formalities of organization would be adopted and that the group will be known as "Dartmouth Lawyers." It was suggested that alumni attorneys in other large centers of the country may be interested in sponsoring a similar movement.
It was agreed there should be no constitution, by-laws, or dues, and no special qualifications for membership. It is contemplated that not more than two "dutch treat" dinners a year will be held, one in the fall and one in the spring, with prominent members of the New York bar and officers of the College as speakers.
The purpose of "Dartmouth Lawyers" in New York is to achieve the advantages that are felt to exist in an association closer than now exists among 250 alumni who are practicing attorneys in the City, a number enlarged each year by new graduates from the law schools. The movement is welcomed to provide a common interest for bringing Dartmouth men together, and to keep a large group of Dartmouth lawyers informed of the College's needs, thus giving full recognition to the important and vital part often taken by lawyers in strengthening the College in respect to gifts and endowment.
Mr. Magill was elected chairman of the Dartmouth Lawyers for the ensuing year and Mr. Lougee was elected secretary. Members of the advisory committee present at the first meeting were: Horace G. Pender '97, Ernest P. Seelman '98, Arthur J. Cohen '03, Thurlow M. Gordon '06, Austin C. Keough '11, Basil O'Connor '12, Richard Remsen '12, Roswell Magill '16, Carl E. Newton '90, Kenneth C.
