DARTMOUTH'S SPRING SEASON of intramural athletics got under way a week later than expected this year due to snow and bad weather. Interfraternity hardball and interdormitory softball were begun with much enthusiasm, augmented by the delay in the long anticipated schedule. The strong teams in the hardball leagues are Theta Delta Chi (led by their pitcher, Jack Townsend '40), Delta Kappa Epsilon, and Phi Gamma Delta, all three of which are undefeated. Phi Delta Theta, winner last year, after a defeat by Delta Tau Delta is hopeful of reaching the finals through the ability of its pitcher, Art Montrey '40, who led the house to victory in the past hardball season. Four hardball games, of five innings each, are being run off daily in order to finish the playoffs in time to complete interfraternity Softball, won last year by Delta Tau Delta.
Although the interdormitory Softball players assume a somewhat less professional attitude, they show no less interest than the fraternity teams. The increasing campus interest in softball is indicated in the large turnout for Activities' League Softball (initiated last year) in which the various campus organizations participate. The Intramural Department has put an exceptionally strong team in this league. Further softball interest on campus has been met by Boxing Coach Bob Veres' original Softball Clinic, conceived as an aid to interested undergraduates and townspeople.
Sigma Chi, having held its lead throughout the four rounds of the interfraternity bridge championship, garnered its second consecutive cup in this activity.
Woodward Hall took an easy first place in the interdormitory swimming meet, annexing thirty points to advance from tenth to fifth place in the dormitory standings. Sigma Chi again took a second annual win by nosing out Theta Delta Chi by nine points in the fraternity meet.
For the first time in its history, the Intramural Department this year held a college open table tennis tournament. Doc Fielding '43, co-winner of the Twin-State Doubles Tournament, easily took a first place over some twenty contestants. Participation this year in intramural activities has broken all past records and has had a unifying effect on the fraternities and on the undergraduates as a whole.
THE BOARD OF STRATEGY (LEFT) WHICH CONVENES DAILY FOR BASEBALL PRACTICE INCLUDES COACH JEFF TESREAU, DAN C. RICHARDSON '91, RETIRED ALUMNUS, AND CHARLES M. AUER OF HANOVER. AT THE RIGHT IS "RED" O'CONNOR '41, NEPHEW OF BASIL O'CONNOR 'l2, WHO IS SECOND-STRING CATCHER AND GENERAL PEPPER-BOX OF THE BALL CLUB.
