This Month
WE INAUGURATE HEREWITH a new tenth issue in our publication schedule, designed to be primarily a review of Commencement and class reunions. The previous lack of adequate means for bringing the whole colorful story of Commencement to the alumni prompted this innovation, and we trust it will be judged worthy enough to be made a permanent number in our schedule.
Starting on page 6 is a play-by-play description of the entire weekend, written by CHARLES E. WIDMAYER '30, Director of the Dartmouth News Service, paving the way for verbatim texts of major addresses. PRESIDENT HOPKINS' Baccalaureate address will be found on page 10. His Valedictory to the class of 1940, and RICHARD F. BABCOCK'S Valedictory to the College appear together 011 page 12. The address of OZIAS D. MATHEWSON '90, representing the 50-year class at the annual meeting of the Alumni Association, is on page 14. At a chapel service in memory of CRAVEN LAYCOCK '96 on Commencement day, DONALD B. ALDRICH '17 spoke, and his address is printed in full on page 18.
Pictures of recipients of Dartmouth's honorary degrees, together with the citations used in their presentation, are to be found on page 15.
For those concerned with student thought regarding the European war, a recent editorial from THE DARTMOUTH is reprinted on page 13. WHITEY FULLER'S column on Dartmouth athletics is on page 20.
Reports by secretaries of reuning classes start on page 22, together with class pictures. Class news is limited to those reuning this year.
The cover picture, by ADRIAN BOUCHARD, is of the Old Pine after seniors have broken their clay pipes in the traditional class day ceremonies.
NEXT YEAR: Dartmouth's Historian, LEON B. RICHARDSON '00, will write a biographical review of President Hopkins' 25 years as administrative head of the College, probably in 3 or 4 instalments. Our series of faculty biographical sketches will be continued. See you in the fall!
