It is reported that the Reising semiautomatic sub-machine gun which may revolutionize small arms practice in the British and American armies is now being produced by the Harrington and Richardson Arms Co., of Worcester, of which Joseph P. Carney '98, once dubbed "New England's Industrial Doctor" by TheBoston Post, is now president and director.
The gun, which fires 500 shots a minute at an effective range of 300 yards, is now being tested in England and Canada by the British and on the Shrewsbury rifle range by the United States army ordinance department. Boston police have also ordered a quantity for testing purposes.
The inventor, Eugene G. Reising, and other engineers of the company are working in an effort to reduce its weight from 6½ pounds to five pounds and to chamber it to fire a new light highly effective ammunition, the .30 S.M.1.
Another important feature of the Reising machine gun is that it lends itself to mass production. It is reported that it will be produced at the rate of 500 a day by February 1 and 1000 a day within a few months after that.
