Secretary, 11 Oak St., Belmont, Mass.
Clark, John Lew—lt's a pleasure to hear from one man of '88 who is not getting ready to go South or just getting back from. John Lew likes Exeter so much that he has no thought of experimenting with other harbors. He relates that his "daughter Catherine was an eyewitness to the recent tragedy at the launching of the new airplane carrier, the Wasp, at Weymouth. She saw the planes collide and the remains of one aviator removed from the wreck. Sounds like the first chapter of Job, but it is not." If only our Secretary had a little of John Lew's knowledge of the "Book of Books," these notes might be of interest to all.
Dunlap, Fred T., when last heard from was bathing in the sunshine of Tampa, and it was good. Poor Fred has not seen a good snowstorm all winter.
Pattee, Fred Lewis—lt is reported that a Dartmouth professor recently in Florida ran across Father Pat at Coronado Beach, and remarked, "My , are you and old Dick B—— going to teach till you are a hundred?" The reply came from Pat, "No-o-o, I've made up my mind to retire at 99 unless I am taken down with cholera infantum." Pattee writes the Secretary: "On March 22, when spring was one day old, I celebrated my birthday-got a present that made me crow like a Shanghai rooster. The Appleton-Century Co. sent me a contract for a new book, which they will issue in the fall. Subject, 'Feminine Fifties.' " Also speaking of Pattee, I understand that the address which he gave last June in dedicating the new English Building at Rollins will appear in the South Atlantic Quarterly, April issue. If the edition is not exhausted, I shall try to get a copy. As to his health Pattee writes: "Feeling fine. The influenza germ, though much younger and more nimble than I am, I have thus far eluded. Let me knock on your head."
Williams, Wendell, was obliged to abandon his plans for his usual visit to Florida. Mrs. Williams announced that to make up for the last Florida trip they will spend much of the summer at the Lake Placid Club. Wendell says, "Mebby." On April 3 Wendell writes he is having a birthday party with all the "fixins." How many candles?
