IN THIS ISSUE the editors are glad to record the achievements of the 1940 Alumni Fund campaign and herald the beginning of the 1941 drive, which will this year be known as the Ernest Martin Hopkins 25th AnniversaryCampaign. The records of the highly successful Alumni Fund results of a year ago will be found on almost every page of this month's issue. An index of tabular material is printed on page 40. Names of contributors—10,181 strong—are listed with their respective class notes.

"A biography of President Hopkins" has often been proposed as feature material of the greatest interest to our readers. This year is the 25th of his administration of the College. The talented services of the historian of the College and the eminent professor of

chemistry, LEON B. RICHARDSON '00, were secured as researcher and author of a Hopkins' biography. The article is published in full, beginning on page 16. In marking the important anniversary milestone in Dartmouth history the editors are grateful to PROFESSOR RICHARDSON for his concise yet comprehensive review of twenty-five eventful years of Dartmouth progress.

A further description of PRESIDENT HOPKINS' career is carried in the story of his defense work in Washington, written by CLYDE C. HALL '26 on page 33.

ROSWELL MAGILL '16, former under secretary of the treasury, is the author of Gifts DuringLife, page 35, pointing to the tax reduction policies that favor gifts to educational and charitable institutions.

Civilian Opportunities for Defense, as reported by a committee of American Defense, Dartmouth Group, and abstracts from a recent address by EDMUND E. DAY '05, president of Cornell, are on page 31 . The UndergraduateChair will be found on page 41 , College News on page 37, and Green Teams on page 43.

Death of Mrs. Geary is news that will be sad tidings to many friends among the alumni, carried on paste 120.

The cover this month, by Boris of Boston, shows President Hopkins at the Tuck Drive entrance to his home.
