AVIATION CADET FRED T. HOWLAND '41 of the Jacksonville Naval Air Station was killed instantly on January 9 when his plane crashed while attempting a landing near Green Cove Springs, Fla. Cadet Howland, whose home was in West Medford, Mass., was solo flying in a three-plane formation near Bostwick Field when his plane suddenly went into a spin resulting in a landing crash.
Howland had been in training at Jacksonville since July 7, before which time he received his primary training as a member of an "Indian Unit" at the Squantum Naval Air Station. He was 27 years old and in addition to being a Naval Air Cadet he had earlier served with the 241 st Coast Artillery and was enrolled in the Naval Reserve as a midshipman. Before coming to Dartmouth, where he was a member of the freshman track team, he had attended Medford High School and Boston University.
Cadet Howland is survived by his mother, Mrs. Esther W. Howland of Arlington, Mass.; a brother, George D. Howland of Belmont, Mass.; and a sister, Mrs. Willard M. Davis, also of Belmont.
