Our stalwart and most successful Head Class Agent, MORT BERKOWITZ, has joined the list of Men In Service. At the present he is an Ensign stationed at Wash., D. C. He was called just at the opening of the Alumni Fund Campaign. He has turned over the job to Fred Castle, 1140 N. Wash. St., Hinsdale, Ill., one of his former agents. Fred's job is tremendous. You are scattered wider than ever before; your country is fighting for it's life. But regardless of your own circumstances you've got to help and in many cases you will have to take the initiative and mail your contribution to Fred without being asked. There will be a committee of hard-working Agents but in some cases they will not be able to contact you, Dartmouth needs our help more than ever. The War is already exacting a heavy toll of undergraduates. The present list of applicants for the freshman class is less than last year. Anyone reading this MAGAZINE, and thereby knowing that the '42 Fund is under way has got to send in his share today. We've got to keep our worthwhile institutions alive so that there will be something TO COME BACK TO WHEN IT'S ALL OVER.
Here's some news before we go into Reunion Plans. Al Bryant's moved to Akron, Ohio. Briggs Austin about to enter the Navy was called back to Rochester, N. Y. by Eastman Kodak on defense work. Tony Turkevitch is in Havemeyer Chem. Lab., Col. U., N. Y. C. Paul Wentworth's a 2nd Lt. in the Artillery (location secret). Art Sprague's in the Signal Corps, Dow Field, Bangor, Me Dick Cooper in Jan. underwent a very serious appendectomy;. Big Ed Shea is an attorney, Ogdensburg, N. Y Bill Montei at Cleveland, Ohio, 11-119 Lake Ave. selling for the Allen Mfg. Sally and Don Pease had a daughter arrive Feb. 19th (Nancy Gay Pease). There are approx. a 10 MARRIED MEN IN THE CLASS.
Wayne Ballantyne, senior fellow, writes from Quito, Ecuador:
"I have just gotten my copy of the Feb. issue of the ALUMNI MAG. and the list of those in the armed forces is simply stupendous. For me the whole problem of the War is something which perforce must be viewed from afar. I left the U. S. almost 3 years ago, just a few days after Eng. and Fr. declared war on Ger. We have had only a blessed peace in S. Amer., except for the great unrest and crisis of the Peruvian-Ecuadorean incident, and I simply cannot visualize what the States must be like now. It appears that those of us who are engaged in vital work, like transportation, for example (Pan American Airways), are requested to remain in S. A I haven't worn an overcoat for 3 yrs. and my wife, who was born in Panama, and lived there most of her life, has never seen snow to touch Not that we cannot see snow in Ecuador, which straddles the Equator. From the Quito airport in reasonably cloudless weather we can see 3 huge snow-capped peaks, all over 18,000 ft. high. I have also flown past Aconcagua in Chile, 23,500 ft. high. One has absolutely no idea how terrifyingly tremendous the Andean chain is Loja, one of Ecuador's largest cities, is at present so isolated from the outside world that the overland trip is a gigantic undertaking. There are only 3 automobiles in the whole town and 2 of these were carried in by boat, rail, and mule-back in pieces. The most recent arrival was spectacularly flown in by air a few weeks ago If you wish, the sole member of the Dartmouth Club of Quito, Ecuador, will go into solitary session and shoot the news to the ALUMNI MAG."
FOR REUNION there's a dance for all classes in Thayer Hall, Friday nite, May 15th. A College folder is being sent to members of all reuning classes re dorm rooms, etc. In the interest of economy our Reunion Committee will use it to contact you guys and gals. Looks as though more than we expected will be coming back. As Bill Falion writes: "A lot of us will take some weekends this summer and spring anyway—and this is the best way I know to spend one of them." Then there's the important job of picking new officers: A treas., a secy., and 5 for an exec, com., one of whom will be the Head Agent. Of the present executive com. Berkowitz, Bialla, and Geraghty are in service and Sloggett lives in Honolulu. Rugbug expects soon to be in the Ski Troops. (SEND YOUR SLUG TO RUG NOW—QUICK.) The following have been named to Devlin's Nominating Committee: Tom Cohen, Bill Greenwood, Ed Ryan, and Hank Whitaker. Here's their report:
"Post cards will be sent to each of you, returnable to the Committee. (It may be in the April MAG.) YOU are to set out your nomination of a Treas., Secy, and 5 add'l. members of an executive committee, naming which one of the 5 you want as Head Agent. (Neither Mort nor Don, because of military service is available). If attendance at Reunion is so small that a representative vote is unobtainable, your nomination may be considered your vote, and the selection may be made on the basis of postcards alone, or postcards plus reuning class-mates' votes. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT each fellow send in a postcard with his men on it. The following suggestions for officers have already arrived: Dana Prescott, Capt. Don Otis, Dave Camerer, Sid Lansburgh, Ad Parker, Hal Putnam, Carl Noyes, Fred Castle, Dana Douglas, Dr. John Milne, Johnny Merrill, John Handrahan, Roy Hatch, Bill Leonard, Julie Leslie, Tony Genewich, Whitey Fuller, Monk Amon. Some think officers should be selected from married men with babies and 4-F Men, or that alternates should be named who could slip in when one set was scattered by the War."
J. Devlin's address is: 94 Stone Rd., Belmont, Mass. Now a rush of news, as space is short.
John Lovely, Springfield, Vt. "making machine tools as fast as we can." Fred Forsch finishing li/2 years as N. Y. attorney, off for the Army soon. John Dingle still with DuPont, Niagara Falls, N. Y. on defense work. Jim Clegg will finish officers training in May at the Q.M. Sch., Camp Lee, Va. Bill Burford is Lt. in Air Corps as Navigator, instructor, Kelly Field, Texas. Eg Cabbie just returned from an extensive trip through S. and C. America and the west coast, in the Army soon. Fran Fenn has drawn up a plan for a 25th Reunion Gift to the College. It will be discussed at Reunion. Latta McCray with Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Lombard, N. Y. C. attorneys: "I have done some work recently for the Sperry Gyroscope Co. It is a real relief to see a company put so much zest into its work. Although I have been unable to get into the service as yet, at least I have something to talk about with the many Dartmouth fellows I see returning from the Navy and the Air Corps, etc." Ted Bruce just rec'd a "Wonderful promotion involving the complete management of one of the outlying branches of Lord & Taylor." Dave Camerer and Latta attended Harry Ellinger's funeral and Dave carried a col- umn on it in the World Telegram. Craw Hinman is house physician at the Boston Arena for all school-boy hockey games. Devlin's kid brother is capt. of the Belmont High team and a flash on the blades. Art Munkenbeck and Vin Turecamo have been classified 4-F. Louis Valier, Ensign, is stationed at San Francisco in Staff Headquarters, Pacific Southern Naval Coastal Frontier. Bill Geraghty is at Ft. Benning, Ga. Officers Training Sch.: "strict discipline—good looking and active bunch of 'gentlemen' (as we are now called)—amazing efficiency, not one second from 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. wasted—all convinced it's going to do us a world of good."
Albie Chester and Marjorie Kahlmeyer of West Medford, Mass. were married Feb. 14th. Good 01' Albie will be settling down now._ Ensign Wally Robson on Jan. 25th married Doris Barringer of N.Y.C., the Gardner School, Mary Lyon School and N. Y. Sch. of Fine Arts. Bob Crawford, Newark, N. J. appointed special agent for the Glens Falls Insur. Co.—a real boost. Dr. Areson ends his stay as "senior on the ward" at Univ. Hosp., Cleveland and will go into OPD. Re John Maloon he says: "if there are any free tickets being given out the good doctor will have his share, and furthermore I dare say he's retailing them at a 'andsome profit."
Bob Hall a UP reporter, Boston. Don Johnson is asst. to Merch. Mgrs., Montg. Ward, N. Y. C. Cal Eldred a cotton goods buyer for Benis Bros. Bag Cos., N. Y. C. Art Ekirch is stationed at Conn. College. Garry Lowe has written a thoughful letter concerning the need for a tangible peace plan—for a real WAR GOAL. I wish there were room to quote from it. Bill Falion has described the "Union Now" Movement—a world-wide democracy. There's lots to write about—much to think about—a job to do.
