670 Main St., Hartford, Connecticut You've no doubt noticed the compactness of this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. C'est la guerre!! Correspondingly this column has been forced to retrench, but your Acting Secretary still hopes to pack in the usual amount of news, though necessarily in briefer form.

WRITER OF THE MONTH
The "Writer of the Month" is Jim Donovan whose letter from Iceland was written far enough in the past so that the censors won't object.
"The other day another officer and I went to a 'place' near-by where there was a 'certain' U. S. Naval vessel which, among other things acts as a movie exchange. We were getting films to show in our camp. After being led from boat deck to bilge and back again we finally obtained our films and headed for the O.D. to ask for a shore boat. I was all set to give him a growl about Navy 'redtape' and sassy seamen.... but he turned out to be a Dartmouth man.... and a '39er too. .. . Scotty Taylor. I recognized him in the dim light, but he didn't know me at first, though probably because I was half smothered by the 'electrified lambskin', 'squash piece,' we wear now. It is a fur cap of 'mad Russian' ancestry I believe Scotty left his bride of eighteen days, earlier in the fall, and has dropped his hook here for a spell. He lives aboard ship and from the nature of his work I judge he must keep busy. He said that he goes ashore every two weeks to take a walk. I'm hoping that he can get to my camp sometime Well, to be brief, we settled down quickly. The days were long and the weather fair. The strangeness of the barren land and its cool blond citizens plus contact with British troops kept us amused for a bit The nights are long, the wind howls and it doesn't rain, it pours with small prospect of much ski snow in our area. Most of us are in isolated spots thus making liberty and entertainment for the men a sizable problem Aside from my regular duties, I am acting as mess officer and company censor. Also doing a bit of 'field work' among the local citizenry on week-ends. Studying social mores and trying to promote Icelandic-American friendship among other things "
