Reunion Classes, Alumni Council, and Class Officers Gather in Hanover for Unprecedented Alumni Week-End

FORCED INTO A HISTORY-MAKING arrangement by the College's accelerated war program, all of Dartmouth's 1942 reunion classes, from the Fiftieth to the Fifth, returned to Hanover over the week-end after Commencement and had such a successful time that perhaps the precedent has been set for special alumni reunion week-ends, not only at Dartmouth but also at other interested colleges.

Such factors as the May 15-16 date, the rationing of gasoline, and the military service of younger graduates cut the reunion attendance to about one-half of normal. Approximately 450 alumni were back, but to this number were added 150 others attending Hanover Holiday and the annual Hanover meetings of the Alumni Council, the Secretaries Association, the Class Treasurers Association, and the newly organized Dartmouth Class Agents Association. With a goodly proportion of wives present also, Hanover was surprisingly well populated for the weekend and, as had been true the week before, all hands were able to move about and obtain their meals without the congestion which used to characterize joint graduation and reunion festivities.

Discuss WAR AND COLLEGE

The Alumni Council, meeting after Commencement for the first time, opened the alumni program with a session in the Sanborn House library on Friday morning, May 15. Sigurd S. Larmon '14 of New York presided and welcomed to the meeting three new Council members: Arthur T. Soule '08 of Boston, Nathan K. Parker '26 of Pittsburgh, and Clifford A. Randall '27 of Milwaukee. A round-table discussion on

"War and the College" featured the meeting, with Dean Bill, Dean Neidlinger, Dean Strong, Treasurer Halsey C. Edgerton '06, Director of Athletics William H. McCarter '19, Prof. Francis J. Neef, director of the Personnel Bureau, Prof. William Stuart Messer, chairman of the American Defense Dartmouth Group and vice-chairman of the Committee on Defense Instruction, and Albert I. Dickerson '30, executive assistant to President Hopkins and Alumni Fund secretary, participating.

Dr. Thomas D. Cunningham '13 of Denver was elected president of the Alumni Council for the ensuing year and William R. Abbott Jr. '27 of Chicago was named vice president. Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, was reelected secretary of the Council. The executive committee will be made up of these three officers, Prof. Francis L. Childs '06 of over, and Bill Cunningham '19 of Boston.

Percy O. Dorr '02 of Springfield, Mass., and Lloyd P. Brace '25 of Boston were elected members-at-large, the latter to succeed Harvey P. Hood II '18, resigned; and Edward E. Martin '19 of New York was reelected for a second term of three years. Harold W. Mason '17 of Brattleboro, Vt., newly elected chairman of the executive committee of the General Alumni Association, became an ex officio member of the Council, and three other alumni were named as Council representatives of the Secretaries, Treasurers and Class Agents organizations, as follows: Rudolf F. Haffenreffer grd '25 of Bristol, R. I., Class Treasurers Association; Mansfield D. Sprague '33 of Bridgeport, Conn., Secretaries Association; and Alex J. McFarland '30 of Boston, Class Agents Association.

Henry E. Atwood '13 of Minneapolis was chosen for the important post of chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee for the coming year, and James M. Mathes '11 of New York was named an alumni member of the Athletic Council for three years starting June, 1942. Theodor S. HanGeisel '25 of New York was again chosen alumni representative on the Jack-o-Lantern board of proprietors for three years.

Other Alumni Council committee chairmen for the coming year are Warde Wilkins '13 of Boston, Nominating Committee; Prof. Francis L. Childs '06 of Hanover. Committee on Alumni Projects; Leslie W. Snow '12 of New York, Committee on Admissions and Schools; J. William Embree Jr. '21 of Chicago, Vocational Committee; Sherman Baldwin '23 of Worcester, Mass., Committee on Class Organizations; Edward E. Martin '19 of New York, Committee on Class Gifts to the College; and William R. Abbott Jr. '27 of Chicago, Parents' Committee.

Alumni Council members present at the May 15 meeting included the following;

George G. Clark '99, Plymouth, N. H.; Edward K. Robinson '04, Boston; Francis L. Childs '06, Hanover; Philip H. Chase '07, Philadelphia; Thomas A. Foster '10, Portland, Me.; Harold P. Hinman '10, Canaan, N. H.; Leslie W. Snow '12, New York; Henry E. Atwood '13, Minneapolis; Thomas D. Cunningham '13, Denver; Warde Wilkins '13, Boston; Sigurd S. Larmon '14, New York; Voyle D. Rector '15, Omaha; Harvey P. Hood 2nd '18, Boston; Edward E. Martin '19, New York; Robert M. Stecher '19, Cleveland; J. William Embree Jr. '21, Chicago; Robert P. Booth '22, Manchester, N. H.; Sherman Baldwin '23, Worcester, Mass.; John E. Foster '23, New York; Sidney C. Hay ward '26, Hanover; Clark Weymouth '26, Rochester, N. Y.; and William R. Abbott Jr. '27, Chicago.

Former members present during the meetings and concluding luncheon were Fred A. Howland '87, Montpelier, Vt.; Willard G. Aborn '93, Barrington, R. I.; James P. Richardson '99, Hanover; Clarence G. McDavitt '00, Boston; Leon B. Richardson '00, Hanover; Arthur H. Ruggles '02, Providence; Clarence C. Hills '05, Norwich, Vt.; John Pearson '11, Hanover; Basil O'Connor '12, New York; Richard Remsen '12, New York; Paul W. Loudon '14, Minneapolis; Sumner B. Emerson '17, New York; Allan Gottschaldt '18, Lyme, N. H.; and Lloyd K. Neidlinger '23, Hanover.

The Alumni Council members who assembled in Hanover on Friday morning saw the familiar reunion tents ready and waiting for the "2" and "7" classes. The use of Butterfield, Streeter, Hitchcock, Lord, Gile, Russell Sage, Chase and Wood- bury as reunion dormitories made Tuck Drive a sort of "Main Street" running through the line of tents. The Dartmouth grads in town the first morning, however, were still mainly those attending Hanover Holiday and the various alumni meetings, and tinkling pianos and convivial song were perennial sounds not to be heard until that night.

The secretaries, class treasurers, and class agents started off their busy schedule with a joint session in the 1902 Room of Baker Library on Friday afternoon. Following the invocation by the Rev. Charles C. Merrill '94 and roll call, David S. Austin '04 of Canaan, N. H., president of the Secretaries Association, welcomed all class officers to the meeting. Informal talks were then given by Prof. John B. Stearns '16 on "Dartmouth in World War I"; Harvey P. Hood 2nd '18 on the Alumni Fund; Miss Charlotte E. Ford, alumni recorder, on alumni addresses; Prof. Andrew J. Scarlett '10, chairman of the Faculty Committee on Educational Policy, on 'War Instruction at Dartmouth"; and Dean Neidlinger on 'War and the Undergraduates."

JOINT BANQUET IN THAYER

The class officers and the Alumni Council met together in Thayer Hall that evening for the annual Associations dinner. Mr. Austin presided at the head table and introduced as speakers Proctor H. Page Jr. '42, secretary-chairman of his recently graduated class; Osborne Cowles, coach of the varsity basketball team; and, as the guest of honor for the evening, President Hopkins.

Immediately after the dinner, President and Mrs. Hopkins held a reception in Thayer Hall for all alumni, and this was followed by a dance in the large dining hall. Many reuning alumni had reached Hanover by this time, and graduates wearing the badges of "gs" or the simple, inexpensive costumes of the younger classes mingled with the class officers who had just come from the Colonial Room next door. Reunion tents proved more of a first- night attraction than the dance, after the early hours, and post-midnight activity shifted to Tent Row.

Class secretaries, club secretaries and class treasurers were up bright and early for the 9 o'clock meetings of their respective groups Saturday morning, while the Class Agents had an extra hour's sleep before convening at 10.

Class secretaries, meeting in the Tower Room, heard a report from the Alumni Council by Sherman Baldwin '23. a report on the ALUMNI MAGAZINE by Editor Sidney C. Hayward '26, "Reflections Upon Retirement" by Eugene D. Towler '17, and a discussion of future class reunions by Prof. Francis L. Childs '06. Meanwhile, the club secretaries in the Paul Room heard William W. Mountcastle '22 of Cleveland discuss "Wartime Alumni Club Activities" and Sidney J. Flanigan '23 of New York talk on "The New Dartmouth Club of New York." A forum discussion of alumni club matters dealt with the College's financial aid program, Dartmouth films, and special services for men in uniform, especially Dartmouth men stationed near alumni centers.

Class and club secretaries then met together to elect officers for the coming year. Doane Arnold '37 of Boston was named president of the Secretaries Association and Henry R. Lane '07 of Boston was chosen vice president. Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover was reelected secretary- treasurer and also editor-in-chief of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE. In addition to these three officers, the executive committee includes Ernest H. Earley '18 and Sidney J. Flanigan '23, both of New York. Robert C. Hopkins '14 of New York and Sherman Baldwin '23 of Worcester were named to the advisory board of the MAGAZINE, the former succeeding Allan Gottschaldt '18 and the latter filling the unexpired term of Mr. Towler, resigned. Mansfield D. Sprague '33 of Bridgeport was chosen Alumni Council representative from the club secretaries for three years starting June, 1943.

In the adjoining Sanborn House the class treasurers, organized last year, were busy adopting a constitution and hearing various reports. President Donald L. Barr 'lB of Hanover reported for the executive committee and Roger C. Wilde '21 of Evanston, Ill., spoke for the special committee on uniform financial reports. Edward E. Martin '19, chairman of the Alumni Council committee on class gifts to the College, spoke on "25th Year Gifts and Class Funds," and general discussion dealt with the group subscription plan of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE and with collection of class dues.

New officers of the Dartmouth Class Treasurers Association are Roscoe O. Elliott '20 of Boston, president; Roger C. Wilde '21 of Evanston, Ill., vice president; and Parker F. Soule Jr. '31 of Hanover, reelected secretary. The association elected Norman Russell '06 of Newburyport, Mass., and Chandler H. Foster 'l5 of Boston to serve on the executive committee with these officers, and also named Rudolf F. Haffenreffer 3rd '25 of Bristol, R. I., as Alumni Council representative.

CLASS AGENTS ORGANIZE

Founding of the Dartmouth Class Agents Association, with James B. Reynolds '90 of Washington, D. C„ as its first president, was the newsworthy outcome of the gathering of class agents in the Sanborn House library. Richard A. Hoi ton '18 of Brooklyn was named vice president; Albert I. Dickerson '30, executive secretary of the Fund Committee, was elected secretary; and Alex J. McFarland 'go of Boston was selected to represent the new association on the Alumni Council. A constitution was adopted and under its aegis all hands settled down to a round table discussion of Alumni Fund affairs.

The traditional alumni luncheon, held this year in Thayer Hall, provided a common meeting ground Saturday afternoon for all class officers and members of reuning classes. The large dining hall was completely filled for one of the most successful events of the week-end. Immediately following the luncheon, enlivened by the en masse arrival of 1917, the annual meeting of the General Association of Alumni was called to order by Basil O'Connor ' 12, president.

Following the invocation by the Rev. Harvie A. Zuckerman '22, Mr. O'Connor spoke briefly on "Dartmouth Continues," declaring that "Whatever the problems of the future may be, we know—we as Dartmouth men know—that this historic College will have the faith and the courage and the leadership to enable it to take its proper place in the service of mankind."

He then in turn introduced the other speakers of the afternoon: Alex D. Salinger '92, for the Fifty Year Class, which was honored at the luncheon and meeting; Prof. William Stuart Messer, for the faculty; Sumner B. Emerson '17, for the 25 Year Class; and finally President Hopkins.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the announcement by Mr. Hayward of the 1943 winners of reunion attendance cups. The Class of 1894 Cup, awarded each year to the class having the highest percentage of living graduates back, went tthe Fifty Year Class of 1892 with 64 per cent of its graduates present. Second honors went to 1897 with 31 per cent and third honors to 1902 with 26 per cent. The Class of 1930 Cup, awarded annually to the class having the largest number of men back for reunion, went to 1917 with sixty men registered by 10 o'clock Saturday morning. The runner-up was 1932 with 57 men, while 1922 and 1927 tied for third with 42 men each. Arthur M. Strong '92 of Brookline, Mass., secretary of his class, accepted the 1894 Cup for 1892, and Dr. Roy D. Halloran 'l7 of Waltham, Mass., accepted the 1930 Cup as reunion chairman.

The Class of 1917 figured in another important event at the alumni meeting when Eugene D. Towler, secretary-chairman of the class, turned over to President Hopkins $6,600 as the start of the Class of 1917 Fund. The presentation of 25th year gifts has become a new tradition at Dartmouth reunions, and the fund raised by 1917 this year is one of the largest thus contributed to the College.

HUGUS HEADS ALUMNI BODY

Officers of the General Alumni Association for the coming year will be headed by Wright Hugus '13 of Wheeling, W. Va., as president. Other officers elected were William D Knight 'OB of Rockford, Ill., and Amos N. Blandin Jr. '18 of Concord, N. H., vice presidents; Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover, secretary-treasurer; and John M. Comstock '77 of Chelsea, Vt., statistical secretary. A seven-man executive committee was named as follows: Harold W. Mason 'l7, Brattleboro, Vt., chairman; Willard G. Aborn '93 of Barrington, R. I.; H. Philip Patey '9B of Boston; Dr. Edward K. Burbeck 'O3 of Marblehead, Mass.; Sherman Baldwin '23 of Worcester; Osmun Skinner '28 of Troy, Pa.; and John S. Monagan '33 of Waterbury, Conn.

With the General Association meeting the business gatherings of the week-end came to an end and reunion events took the center of the stage. The Dartmouth- Holy Cross baseball game drew nearly everyone to Memorial Field for the remainder of the afternoon, and in the evening class reunion dinners were held. Tent Row came into its own again after much feasting and after-dinner speaking, and except for the official class meetings on the following rainy Sunday morning, reunions for "2" and "7" men had swiftly come and gone for another five years.
