THE GIFT OF A PORTRAIT of Daniel Webster, class of 1801, has been made to the College by Charles F. McGoughran '20. It was painted by Joseph Goodhue Chandler in 1852. The portrait is widely known as an original from which numerous copies were made. It is now on exhibition in the lounge of the Hanover Inn.
A recent article in the New York Sun titled "Mid-century Art Lost, Can It Be Found?" which listed the Chandler portrait of Webster, resulted in identification of Mr. McGoughran's canvas as the missing item. His gift of the portrait to Dartmouth is a valued addition to the considerable collection of Webster portraits owned by the College and which are for the most part located in Webster Hall.
