Workers—Men

THE AMERICAN RED CROSS needs men for assignment to service in military camps and with military units both in this country and outside the continental limits of the United States. These workers provide personal service to the men in the armed forces regarding their personal and social problems. They are responsible for Red Cross activities in the camps, including arranging for instruction of service men in first aid and water safety, and the interpretation of all Red Cross services to the commanding officer and his subordinates. In this country they assist in the formation of camp and hospital service councils and in coordinating their activities.

Opportunities for appointment are available to men between 30 and 50. Men of ages subject to military service are not accepted unless they have been given a deferred classification under Class 3-A or 4-F. Education: Graduation from college; training in a graduate school of social work desirable. Skill in guidance and counseling acquired through college work is acceptable in some instances. Applicants for assignment as recreation workers (employed only for service with military units outside the continental United States) should be college or university men who have majored in education, group work, recreation, physical education, sociology, or public welfare administration. Experience: Preferably in the field of social work. Applicants having no such experience should have a record of active participation, at least on a voluntary basis, in community activities of a social welfare nature. Recreation workers (see preceding paragraph) must have had three years of work (full-time) in leisure-time activities with a public or private agency, of which two years shall have been in actual leadership of individual and group activities, and one year shall have been in work of a supervisory or administrative nature.

Men assigned to service in this country receive $175 to $200 a month. Those assigned outside the U. S. receive $200 to $225 a month, plus an additional $45 a month for mainten ance.
