It is our painful duty to record the loss of another beloved classmate.

Winthrop Abbott passed away July 26 at his home 36 High St., Greenfield, Mass.

Your Secretary has been privileged by Mrs. Abbott to read a few of the very many letters of sympathy which she has received from former associated teachers, students, and friends.

I cannot refrain from a word or two about Mrs. Abbott, who was his constantly faithful attendant during all these ten years of her husband's helplessness. Her cheery patience under extraordinarily trying circumstances must have been a great source of gratification to our classmate.

Local and state papers carried many fine notices of his death.

Space permits only a small portion of what was printed in the Springfield Republican, July 26: "Something of the gentility and nobility of life of another era passed this week with the death of Winthrop P. Abbott, former Superintendent of the Greenfield Schools, who had become almost a Greenfield legend during his actual lifetime. At least, this modest, gentle soul, to whom personal integrity was a living creed, rather than a copy book catchword, was hardly representative of the present age.

"It was no lip service he won from his subordinates, but deep and abiding affection and respect, almost in some cases to the point of idolatry. Yet, such was the nature of the man, that he would have been embarrassed acutely at any outward display of their reverence by his teachers."

He surely was a sincerely useful man. (See In Memoriam)

We learn that Dr. Perley O. Place was a vacation guest in August at Dr. Guy W. Cox's farm, Pittsfield, N. H.
