WALTER ROACH, who came to Dartmouth in June on a temporary summer appointment as Assistant in Play Production, has been elected to the College faculty as Assistant Director of The Players with the rank of Assistant Professor, it was announced yesterday by President Hopkins.
In order to join the Dartmouth faculty, Mr. Roach has resigned his position as Assistant Professor in Speech and Director of Dramatics at Kansas State College. During the past two months he has not only assisted Warner Bentley in the direction of dramatics at Dartmouth but has also had a large share of responsibility for the varied and successful program of recreation provided for V-12 and civilian students by the Council on Student Organizations.
He also served as director of the recent Players' show "Double Door." in which Mary Morris, Broadway star, played the lead.
Mr. Roach has taught at Kansas State College for the past two years, and from 1938 to 1941 he served as Instructor in Speech and Dramatics at the University of Wisconsin, where he also filled the position of State Manager and obtained his Ph.M. degree in 1939. Immediately following his graduation from the University of lowa in 1927 he was for one year Instructor in Stagecraft at that university.
A native of England, Mr. Roach has done other theatrical work, including the directorship of the Topeka Civic Theatre in Kansas and earlier professional work in New York City. He was once art director for Junior Programs, Inc., in New York and also served as business manager for Bil Baird, New York artist.
