THE ANNUAL FALL MEETING of the Dartmouth Alumni Council was held in Boston at the University Club, November 12. J. William Embree Jr. '21 of Chicago, president of the Council, presided at a joint luncheon of members of the Board of Trustees and Councillors which was the opening event on the program. Following luncheon the Trustees and Council adjourned to separate business sessions. Speakers before the two groups at lunch were Halsey C. Edgerton '06, treasurer of the College, and President Hopkins '01. Mr. Edgerton spoke on the current financial situation in Hanover especially in respect to contractual arrangements with the Navy. Although the Navy contract had not been completed at that date Mr. Edgerton predicted that it would be very helpful in current operations. He described in detail the serious problems that will face the College in the future when reconversion to normal activity is required.
President Hopkins discussed in off-therecord fashion policies and problems of the College in its war-time program. He praised the Government for its broadgauged and far-sighted planning of the Navy V-12 Program under which Dartmouth has a unit of 1850 Marine and Naval trainees. The President devoted much of his talk to a discussion of the problems that will face Dartmouth when men return to Hanover, probably in large numbers, after the war. The College will recognize its obligation to take care of these men whose education was interrupted. There will also be large groups from secondary schools seeking admission. He predicted changes in previous curricula policies and other procedures of the College as a result of experience with the Navy V-12 plan.
BUSINESS MEETING
Mr. Embree presented the Dartmouth Vocational Plan, to assist alumni in the armed forces seeking reemployment after the war, as a most important new 'activity sponsored by the Alumni Council. He called on Carl A. Gray '23 of Plainville, Conn., author of the widely hailed Connecticut Plan for reemployment of service men to introduce the subject. Mr. Gray discussed the question on a national basis and then made observations and recommendations on Dartmouth's particular situation. He expressed confidence that the Alumni Council, through regional alumni workers in all parts of the country, will provide very helpful service to the returning alumni veterans.
Harold W. Mason '17, Brattleboro, reported for the Council's Vocational Committee in the absence of the chairman Fred C. Shaneman '24, of Tacoma. He announced plans for organization of the alumni body to handle vocational help for alumni and introduced Francis J. A. Neef, director of the College Personnel Bureau in whose office much of the work will be handled. A more complete announcement of the Dartmouth • Vocational Plan appears on page 7 of this issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE..
