Real News: Beck Johnson has volunteered to secure the service records and pictures of our class family, Pa, Ma, children and grandchildren, for the class records. You will all enjoy hearing from him soon. Beck is chairman of the Pittsfield Public Safety Committee in Pittsfield, Mass., is O.K. personally, and has a son and daughter-in-law in the service.
Sunday, December 6 was a happy one in the home of Bill and Mrs. Slayton at 45 Coughey Street, Waltham, Mass. His son, Wendell, was home on a short leave from Naval duty. Lieutenant Slayton was first assistant engineer of a U. S. Navy Supply Ship which was part of the huge convoy sent for the invasion of North Africa. He saw considerable exciting action both on land and in the air during the time spent off the African Coast, and returned from the expedition with a promotion from junior to senior rank. He had been continuously on Naval duty since last March. He graduated from the Massachusetts Nautical School and served in the U. S. Lighthouse service, and in the Merchant Marine till December, 1940, when he entered the Navy, specializing in Diesel engines. The oldest son, Norman, a civilian employee at a service club at Fort Devens, with his wife and sons Thomas and Joel, and Private William H. Slayton Jr., just completing his basic training at Fort Devens, were also present.
The three sons of the Streeter family are in our nation's service: Ensign Frank Son submarine chaser duty; Ensign Harry S. on destroyer duty, USNR, and Thomas W. Jr., in the U. S. Army Enlisted Reserve. This paragraph from a recent letter of Tom's is significant:
"The replies are coming in well from my class letter, and quite a number take the trouble to write a letter to go with their check. These letters make the class treasurer's job a pleasant one."
Hats off to the Claytons and the Streeters tor their contributions to our victory forces. Judge Sewall: On December 16, by a unamimous vote, Maine's Executive Council confirmed Gov. Sumner Sewall's selection of Arthur Eugene Sewall of York as a superior court justice. Here's to you, Judge Sewall!
The Austins and Rollinses had a curbstone reunion in Lebanon, Dec. 19, which we enjoyed greatly. Sid and Mrs. Rollins had just become grandparents again, and were enjoying it. If my memory is still good, it's the seventh (!) time this degree has been conferred upon this modest couple. It looks as if the Grandfather contest would have to be reopened. Will Judge Sewall care to make a ruling?
