Through the friends of the Dartmouth Library, Baker Memorial Library recently has received four gifts of manuscript material and first editions. Among these is the gift from H. L. Mencken of cards with manuscript notes used in preparing his ANew Dictionary of Quotations. Mr. Mencken also presented the Library with an autographed first edition of HeathenDays, to be added to the volumes and other material which he has generously contributed in the past.

Richard H. Mandel '26, who previously has given the College valuable collections of H. L. Mencken, Aldous Huxley and Norman Douglas, last month presented Dartmouth with a collection of 25 volumes, mainly first editions, by Frank Harris.

Prof. Herbert F. West '22, secretary of the Friends of the Dartmouth Library, recently made his fifth major gift to the College by presenting a collection of 24 first editions of the works of the English poet and naturalist, Edward Thomas. His other collections in possession of Baker Library are of the works of Wilfrid Scawen Blunt, R. B. Cunninghame Graham, Edward Garnett, and Henry Williamson.

George Matthew Adams, New York author and journalist, has also given twelve first editions of Edward Thomas to supplement those presented by Professor West. Mr. Adams is the donor of two of Dartmouth's prize collections, those of Joseph Conrad and Herman Melville.

Music FOR THE MARINES Don Cobleigh '23, assistant professor of music and director of the Dartmouth Glee Club,on leave of absence, has reported to Parris Island for basic training, after which he willbe given high non-commissioned rank and will serve as assistant to a Naval Chaplain withthe Marines.
