Coach Whitey Burnham's varsity soccer team closed with a 3-6-1 record. The Indians won their finale at Penn, 1-0. The previous week Dartmouth downed Cornell, 4-1, after losing five in a row. Again the club was involved in one-goal decisions, five in all. Ab Oakes guided his freshman soccer team through an even split, 5-5.
Junior Mohamed Naciri of Marrakech, Morocco, won scoring honors. Center fullback Naciri had five goals. Outside left Fred Palmer, a junior, had three goals. Goalie Bob McGee, another junior, saved 170 shots in nine games. Naciri appeared in only seven games. Chip Harvey, a senior fullback, was the varsity captain. Halfback Greg Church was the frosh captain.
Varsity cross country battled uphill all fall and ended with a 0-6-1 summary. Senior Per Bang Jensen was the captain for Coach Ellie Noyes. Dartmouth ran ninth at the annual Heptagonals in New York. Coach Noyes enjoyed more success with his freshman team. The younger runners finished 3-3 over the regular schedule and ran second at the Columbia Invitational in New York. Earl McEvoy was the frosh captain.
To say that Dartmouth played 500 this fall is precisely correct. The combined record of six teams, varsity and freshman, was 23-23-2.
