DARTMOUTH WAS LISTED among 47 colleges and universities selected by the Navy for its student specialized training program and announced in the papers of February 7. President Hopkins has not received any information beyond the announcement that basic engineering training would be given by the College, and that a Naval board of inspection would be sent to Hanover to survey facilities of instruction, housing and feeding, to determine the size of the Dartmouth unit, date for its beginning, and related questions.
It is believed that the program will be designed for boys of college age assigned to the Navy through Selective Service and for college students who are enrolled in Naval Reserve Corps. If this is the plan (which is not confirmed as we go to press) it is similar to the Navy program outlined by Dean Neidlinger in his article in this magazine last month and also similar in general form, but not in detail, to the Army plan announced by Wilbur Munnecke '27 in this issue (see page 9).
Other New England institutions named in the Navy's announcement last month are M. I. T., Tufts, Brown, Worcester Tech, Holy Cross, and Yale. Plans for the new Navy program in Hanover will be announced in future issues of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
