RESULTS OF THE American History Tests . given last fall to all freshmen have been announced and show that Dartmouth students compared favorably with college students nationally on the examination of the Cooperative Test Service, a nationwide examination bureau. The other test taken by the freshmen was one prepared by Dartmouth professors.

On the combined results of both tests, a passing grade of 66 was established and on this basis 74 per cent of the freshmen passed. The report submitted to President Hopkins and the Committee on Educational Policy by the History Department declared that "a considerable number of Dartmouth students are inadequately prepared."

It was discovered that there was no high degree of correlation between the Scholastic Aptitude tests previously given and the history examinations. Investigation showed that more than 92 per cent of the freshmen had had some American History prior to taking the tests. A survey of the class of 1942 taken at the time of graduation last spring revealed that only 11 members out of a class of 446 had not had some American History.
