184 Withdrawals

UNDERGRADUATE WITHDRAWALS from College during the first two months of the present term numbered 184 men, practically all of whom went directly into military service. The semester started on January 18 with 1,294 men enrolled, and on March 15 approximately 1,100 were still in attendance, although resignations are being handed in daily. Many of the men who withdrew during the first two months of the term were called up as Army Air Corps Reserves.

Men leaving for military service now receive a proportionate amount of a semester's credit for the work accomplished, in accordance with a plan recommended by Dean Neidlinger and approved by the Committee on Educational Policy. In addition to hours of credit, students withdrawing for military service will also receive a grade on the work accomplished up to the time of leaving. Before the adoption of this arrangement, credit was granted only upon completion of a course or semester. Partial credits, it is believed, will be much fairer to the withdrawing student and will reward good work even though not completed. They will also be advantageous to the man resuming his studies after the war.
