CONTINUING ITS STRONG showing in the early stages of the campaign, the 1943 Alumni Fund had reached the figure of $55,378.05 on March 15. Because of the wartime necessity of starting the campaign earlier than in any previous year, comparisons as of that date can hardly be made, but even so the early response of Dartmouth alumni to the Fund Committee's appeal has been record-breaking and augurs well for the success of the 1943 campaign, which will continue through the customary date of June 30.
With 96% of contributors and a cash total of $4,704, the Class of 1901, under Class Agent Harry B. Gilmore, was far ahead of the rest of the field on March 15. An interim report, based on percentage of contributors, placed 1887 second with 64%, and 1888 and 1898 in a third-place tie with 40% each. Others already above the 20% mark were 1889, 1886, 1897, 1909, 1939,
1933, 1928, and 1936. Behind 1901 in total contributions came 1912 with $2,077. Twelve other classes which have gone above $1,000 in their totals are 1917, 1925 1910 1915, 1914, 1923, 1908, 1937, 1931, 1936, 1909, and 1924. Generous contribu- tions from the younger classes, which have large numbers of men in military service, are a gratifying feature of the campaign thus far.
During the past month a new class agent for the Class of 1922 was announced, John D. Dodd of East Orange, N. J., succeeding Robert P. Booth, Alumni Council member from Manchester, N. H., who has resigned his Fund post after an outstanding record over a period of years. Thomas E. Oakes '41 will enter military service on April 1 and a new head agent for that class will also be announced shortly.
Class agents from the Chicago area gathered at a dinner meeting at the University Club, Chicago, on March 23 and at that time heard President Hopkins speak. Henry E. Atwood '13, Alumni Fund chairman, presided at the dinner, and Albert I. Dickerson '30, executive secretary of the Fund Committee, also spoke. Similar gatherings of class agents from the New York and Boston areas will be held on April 3 and April 10, respectively, in connection with the meetings of class officers.
