The Old French Army Officer (in the last guerre) Dave Garratt (Ch. 18ths 25th gift to Dartmouth) wept with joy and wanted so much to express his emotion in true French custom by smacking the right and left cheeks of F. D. (Col. F. D.) Duke, for the check of 4 figures to Dartmouth.

'18 DINNER NEW YORK MARCH 18-
RED HULBERT said of the party "still somewhat of a 'furriner' myself but enjoyed catching up with a lot more of the boys I hadn't seen them since '17." Thanks to HOWIE PARK we got this report "Murray Hill Hotel bar—traditionally the gathering place of the Best People—managed to keep up with the demands of smiling PETE COLWELL, LT. COL. 808 MORRISON (and didn't the broken-down barflies of '18 envy him in his natty new uniform) JOHNNY JOHNSTON and the MC ELWAIN. RED HULBERT, who used to give the hot foot to a soccer ball in the most approved style, came in and was welcomed mightily. HENRY OPPENHEIM came all the way from Albany just to see us and we were glad to see him. Seated at the best table were such notables as HORT KENNEDY, Montana's gift to the Psi U's, looking like a million dollars (at pre-war surtax rate) GEORGE STODDARD, SWEDE BENNETT, PAUL MINER, STAN JONES, TY TYRREL, RED WILSON, DAVE GARRATT, DAVE SKINNER and DICK HOLTON who rounded the boys over to the Club nicely JUDGE HARRY COLLINS was slapped on the back aplenty, nearly choked to death, gulped his food—and never let it be said he got 2 cups of coffee where the other boys got but one—no sir! Everything was on the level. BILL CHRISTGAU showed up in the wings and was applauded and was seen gallantly buying drinks for MIRIAM MORRISON and Ann Johnston." Said RED WILSON "No doubt you have noticed 808 MORRISON'S silver plating on his oak leaves and AL RICE'S bright new stripe between the two tarnished ones." .... Thanks to AL RICE, PAUL MINER and PETE COLWELL who further reported, we learned others present were ERIC BALL, MEL SOUTHWICK, WALTER ROSS, CURT GLOVER, MIKE POUNDS, DWIGHT SARGENT, and BILL WALES. Said Pete Colwell, "My son, Bob Jr., is a corporal attending a radio school near Wash, for Army Air Force. In one month he attained a rank that it took me 2 years to achieve in the last war." .. . .

'NEW CLASS OFFICERS FOR NEXT 5 YEARS ? HORT KENNEDY was appointed Chairman of the Nominating Committee. It was decided that this New (?) Deal should also perpetuate itself for the duration (Speak up, Brothers!) STUMPIE BARR reports the greatest number ever of 'lßers to pay dues—2l4 (the old dependables) And you ? Are you in ?
DAVE GARRATT'S WONDERFUL RESULTS —When DAVE was asked the question, "Is $15,000 just around the corner?" he replied, "Sure, there's 100 birds we haven't heard from—it holds up the parade—puh-leeze—tell them to come in; 136 '18ers have given cold cash of $10,778 or an average of $79 each. Estimating pledges conservatively is $2300 additional—that's a total better than $13,000." .... Cheese, Fellers—do you realize the .job that DAVE has done? Doing all this work and a hell of a job it is too, and contributing mighty handsomely in 3 figures himself, don't you think DAVE deserves from each one of us, either (1) a reply (2) a pledge or (3) a check? Don't wear the man out—he's been at this job for 2 years —and, Reader, if you haven't given DAVE a tumble PUHLEEZE do it today.
In an appeal from FREEDOM HOUSE published in New York newspapers listing WENDELL WILLKIE, DOROTHY THOMPSON and other important citizens as directors, is the name of our own LES GRANGER From Congressman JAY LE FEVRE: "I haven't made my maiden speech yet (2/5/43). These get-together parties which the new congressmen have remind one very much of the old freshmen days at Hanover—there are no football rushes or all night hang-outs in White River to return to the township of Hanover for an early morning picture, but there are plenty of photographers and long 'bull sessions.' Must quit now and cast my first vote for the first big bill to come before Congress—a billion, two hundred million for Treasury and Post Office department." JOHN H. SULLIVAN FOOD DIRECTOR IN MASS.—Voting in STAN JONES '18 Gallup Poll 'Roosevelt Forever', Boston newspapers reported in Jan., "Under the new set-up each area in Mass. will be the smallest unit in nationwide organization which has been set up by Wash, and the food industry. Various committees were named by Chairman JOHN H. SULLIVAN." From JACK SLABAUGH, "Where can I get a good lawyer? Am thinking of suing CORT HORR and the ALUMNI MAGAZINE for libel—FELT'S report was pretty bad too.". . . .From LT. COL. GENE CLARK (Springfield, 111.): "Am still whacking the colon bacteria out of drinking water supplies in laboratory at State Capitol Bldg. Keeping the home front healthy is going to be tough, for 30 of our 40 health engineers are now in the armed forces. One of our Lab men has become a scholar of the Jap language. Lang Robinson was home recently." .... The greatest enthusiasm of BILL MONTGOMERY as he relaxed after a brief illness was the progress of DAVE GARRATT'S 25TH FUND and the masterly and pleasant way DAVE has encouraged the boys to ante up. A great, great rooter for D, and what D did for him, Bill gets enormous pleasure out of giving some of his nephews a lift through college—thinks, as do others, colleges in the future will have to do more for the "average guy."
They say about AL ZULICK! That his grandfather began their wonderful business—that they make the finest shoes in the country—that in years back they tarred and feathered the Unions (at the suggestion of the employees) and generations of happy employees make a career in the Zulich plant. ....From FREDDIE MORSE (San Francisco): "Now with the U. S. Public Health—in uniform again—in grade of Surgeon (Major) serving the farming population of Cal., Arizona, Utah and Nevada." .... BILL CHRISTGAU reports that our Congressman, JAY LE FEVRE, missed two roll calls (tut-tut-Jaysus!) CHRIS is a Supervisor and Instructor extraordinaire of the Metropolitan Life—not only shows the men on the firing line but can do his own stuff along the front LT. GEORGE ARNOLD (NAVY) paid a visit to DAVE GARRATT and quietly withdrew leaving a check of $5OO for the 25th Said ROGER: "Liberal Arts in education is a luxury but a life well worth fighting for." .... RED and PEGGY WILSON are getting ready for big farm operations in Conn, by studying farming as a business.
BEN STONE TELLS DICK HOLTON: "I'm happy to be able to make my gift to the Alumni Fund larger this year. It is vital that every member of the class come across in greater measure than ever before." His check was in 3 figures. DICK HOLTON made a strong talk at the Class Agents' meeting, D. Club N. Y., 4/3/43. "The regulars you can depend upon—they know this work takes time—they're business-like and their checks are automatic. It's the others we have to go afteranyone can call me any invective he wants—as long as he pays for it. All 'lBers are as good as gold on the Alumni Fund, but some forget." Forget it now by sending Dick your check today. Dick would match 10-fold most anyone's check for the Alumni Fund to get rid of this job (if he were that kind). What makes him work so hard for '18? Become a regular, who doesn't cause him work, worry, additional postage and expense
GERRY GERAN who says he's always been like the Irish—allergic to work—is now taking it aplenty—as inspector on precision work—seldom sees daylight From Farmer TOM PROCTOR:
"Commute 40 miles to work—leave the house at 7 and get back at 7—get up at 5, get an hour's work done around the farm before I leave."
