A recent dispatch from "somewhere in New Guinea" tells of the successful attack by a Liberator bomber on a group of Japanese ships. Navigator of the bomber was Lt. Philip Conti '37, former Dartmouth football star. According to the report, the Liberator "pounced on a concentration of Japanese ships off New Guinea, sinking one merchant ship and heavily damaging two others in a series of attacks." After two direct hits, the bomber "then ranged five miles out to sea and made two strafing passes against a 1500-ton vessel at masthead height, starting fires with several hundred 50 calibre machine gun slugs Anti-air- craft fire fouled the plane's hydraulic system, but none of the crew was hurt."
