IN A BULLETIN to chairmen and members of 35th Reunion Gift Committees, E. E. Martin '19 announces total deposits with the College of $88,150.88 contributed to Class Memorial Funds. Mr. Martin is chairman of the Alumni Council Committee on Class Gifts, a project of rapidly increasing importance in Dartmouth affairs.
The class of 1919 with its 25th gift in June of more than $25,000 heads the list of 16 classes that have established Class Memorial Funds. The class of 1913 started the present movement of substantial support of the College through 25th gifts which had earlier been featured by major gifts at 25th reunions of the classes of 1894, 1900, 1902 and others. Since 1938 when the class of 1913 celebrated its 25th reunion by turning over a cash gift to the College every class approaching the 25th anniversary has joined in what has become a tradition of the greatest importance. The class of 1918 with a gift in 1943 of more than $21,000 stands second only to 1919 in the list of 25th reunion gifts.
The plan followed by all groups with the approval of the Alumni Council is to solicit contributions from all members of the class in the years between the 20th and 25th reunions. In advance of those years younger classes seek support of the project among a limited group in the class. In his recent bulletin to the committees in charge Mr. Martin calls attention to the desirability of urging all Dartmouth men to include in their wills bequests to the College for allocation to Class Memorial Funds.
Class funds are added to College endowment and are included in the structure of the Alumni Fund. The income from class funds, after they are turned over to the College at the 25th reunion, is credited to the annual achievement of the class in Alumni Fund campaigns.
Class Funds have included many gifts of war bonds. Alumni who wish to combine the patriotic purchase of war bonds with this support of the College should keep in mind two requirements, as follows: only series F or G bonds, held by corporations, and not series E bonds held by individuals, should be purchased; bonds should be made payable to: Trustees of DartmouthCollege, A Corporation, Hanover, N. H.
In line with the plans of the Alumni Council the following classes approaching their 25th reunions are campaigning for Class Memorial Funds this fall: 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923 and 1924. In some other class groups earlier than 1913, where Memorial Funds have not previously been established, the plan will be put into operation in the near future. In all other younger classes gifts will be welcomed this fall although class-wide campaigns will not be operated until after the 20th reunion.
Following is a summary of principal amounts on deposit with the College for classes that have already adopted the Class Memorial Fund plan:
