Ellis O. Briggs '21, whose nomination as ambassador to the Dominican Republic was recently confirmed by the Senate, began his career, which has led him into diplomatic higher brackets, in a colorful style soon after his graduation from Dartmouth. Traveling to Constantinople, his future Excellency became the tutor of the sixteen-year- old brother of the Shah of Persia. He also taught geography to the son of the ex-Pasha of Smyrna, and as extracurricular instruction, tried to show his high-born pupil why it mattered about shifting gears when driving a car. He has shot big game in Africa and is the author of several short stories which have appeared in popular magazines. Beginning his diplomatic career in 1925, Ambassador Briggs has served his government at Callama, Chile; Liberia, Africa; Havana, Cuba; as well as in the State Department in Washington. In 1940, he was sent to Santiago, Chile, as American Consul and first secretary of the American Embassy.
