Ed Schuster writes, "After having investigated the situation personally, I can now write authoritatively concerning our first off spring Peter Eden Schuster born December 31, 1944. Over the weekend I was allowed by the U. S. Navy to see Mama and son. Both are in excellent health, and even if my face frightened the little one, Mildred appeared happy about it but then, she is getting used to it."
Michael Anthony Steers is the name of Buck and Hannah Steers' second son and third child, born January 16. We are indebted to George Steers for imparting the tidings about his nephew, as it took Buck some little time to recover after the event.
California leads the field for news this month, in spite of the statement of Lt. Warner Crane, who is stationed at the Naval Supply Depot in Oakland. "This is barren country in all respects, the Chamber of Commerce notwithstanding. The East Coast is the place to live and don't be sold otherwise," he says. Les Bailey is at the Lathrop Engineer Depot, and writes, "I keep moving west and expect the next jump to be a big one before long. Have been kept more than busy getting the engineer supplies to the ports on time. Haven't run into any Thirtymen, but do meet a Dartmouth man now and then." Major Harry Stewart's present address is the Hoff General Hospital, Santa Barbara. Doris Van Derbeck sent Van's class dues along with the news that he is af supply officer on a combat transport (APA) and that he left California last November. While the VanDerbecks were in Long Beach they saw Lt. Willard Brown, who was particularly helpful in making them feel at home. According to Doris, Brownie has been a member of the Commission Detail stationed at Western Pipe and Steel Cos Dick Hood, head of the Los Angeles F.8.1, office, says he occasionally runs across a Thirtyman out there, but would be glad to see more of them. Did any of you read about Dick's activities in rounding up a bunch of dining car waiters on the Union Pacific, who had been engaged in a lucrative racket with the dining car receipts? We were told some of the details by a U.P. official, and it was typically F.8.1, the way the culprits were apprehended.
Lt. Bill Keller is down in Panama, where he says there is need of a good snowstorm. No doubt some of the boys in Buffalo and Rochester would be glad to send him some. So would Ed Troidle, perhaps, who is now in Albany, after having lived for over four years in Rochester. Ed is still with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, as auditor for the Division of Milk Control.
Gene Magenau is back home in Concord and is reopening his architectural office, after almost three years as an engineer in a plywood manufacturing plant in Manchester. His injured back is on the mend, for his doctor sent Gene to a specialist in Manchester who turned out to be Bob Rix, who fixed him up in pretty good shape, but told him to be careful about bending and lifting (his back).
Ellis Gilbert was in Dallas all last summer with the Starlight Operetta Company, and then went on tour with the Chas. L. Wagner Opera Cos. Since the middle of November he lias been in New York with the Metropolitan Opera Cos., as assistant to the head stage manager. Gil says it is a fascinating job, with excellent training and connections.
Comdr. Jack Smith, mentioned last month as senior medical officer on the , has also been appointed to the staff of Admiral Radford, commander of the fast Carrier Task Group in the Pacific.
Nelson Rockefeller, selected by the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce as the "nation's outstanding young man of 1944," has advised that Vic Borella is now executive director of the Office of Coordinator of InterAmerican Affairs.
Having just read the article by Secretary of State Stettinius about the Dumbarton Oaks Peace Plan in the current Reader's Digest, we were interested in a newspaper clipping from the Camden, N. J., Post, to the effect that Dr. Merrill E. Bush was to address the Camden Kiwanis Club on the subject, "Dumbarton Oaks Challenges the Citizen." The meeting was to be the form of a general discussion with the members and guests invited to participate in a question-and-answer period following Dr. Bush's address. Merrill is executive director of the United Nations Council of Philadelphia, assistant professor of education at Temple University, and author of a report on the Institute of Postwar Planning, which was published by Harper's last year under the title, "Citizen, Plan for Peace."
Capt. Bill Lucas sent in his generous contribution to the Alumni Fund with the following interesting letter which bears quoting in full:
I can't remember when I wrote last, but it must have been over a year ago. As you see, I am still in India, and probably will be around here, or in Burma, for another several months. During the past year I have had a good many interesting experiences, and I have been very lucky through it all. Last Spring I was in on the Wingate "Invasion of Burma." That is, I was in the air end, and landed on all the various fields established in Burma behind enemy lines. But you have probably seen enough written about all that already. It was about as exciting as going off the big ski jump for the first time, and that's saying a good deal.
After that I spent quite a while briefing combat crews. As I am still on flying status, I get to the combat area often enough to keep up with the situation. And I have managed to put in enough combat flying time, (over 100 missions), to be the proud possessor of the Air Medal and the D.F.C.
For the past couple of months I have been an Officer of my group. I have been pretty lucky all around, as a matter of fact. See you at the next reunion. Also enclosed is my Alumni Fund check for 1945.
A WAH HOO WAH for you, Bill, and may your luck hold good.
