AT A SPECIAL LUNCHEON MEETING on May 20, the Dartmouth Club of Hawaii entertained "Doc" O'Connor '12, who was passing through the islands en route to forward Pacific areas as National Chairman of the American Red Cross. Governor Stainback of the Territory was also a guest at the luncheon.
"Doc" made a big hit with the boys and gave them a very interesting extemporaneous talk centering about the serious problems of peace. He paid tribute to the part which Dartmouth men together with men from other colleges are playing in the war. In discussing the problems of the peace, "Doc" remarked that after his tour of Europe he was particularly impressed with the fact that as civilization progresses, its self-destruction becomes more possible. Our institutions of learning, he stated, must reex- amine their educational philosophies and emphasize the intangible values of life. He pointed out that unless these spiritual values were recognized in the making of the peace, we will simply be sowing the seeds of another war.
In conclusion "Doc" said that the nation is efficiently geared for war, that it is aware of the fact that there is a full-sized war out in the Pacific and that the Japs would be taken care of as speedily as possible.
