Two Dartmouth men, John Turkevich '28 and Edward F. Hammel '39, have been awarded certificates of service, and silver lapel pins by the War Department, for their contributions toward the development of the atomic bomb. Working with a group of physical chemists under the direction of Dr. S. Taylor at Princeton, both men spent almost two years on the atom bomb program in the Frick Chemical Laboratory. Their group was assigned to diffusion and heavy, water problems, and the development of new analytical methods of study, manufacturing processes, and critical testing of materials that entered into various stages of the bomb project. A processing method vital to the recovery of fissionable material was one of many important results. The highly secret nature of the work prevented earlier announcement of the two Dartmouth scientists' participation in this world-rocking research problem.
