This book, designed for use in the third and fourth years of Preparatory School Latin, consists of short and isolated excerpts from Latin prose and poetry, interspersed with many summaries of omitted passages; many translations of passages of Latin which appear in the text; quotations from American, English, and French authors; suggestions for collateral reading; vocabularies; footnotes; many illustrations which, unfortunately, have been badly reproduced. Part I, to which the greater part of the third year is to be devoted, has for training in translation from English into Latin eighty-five sentences of which thirty-four are optional. The appendices deal with "The Laboratory Method" of translation; Metrics; The Roman Republic; Latin Inflections; Latin Syntax. There are notes with musical settings for the Alcaic and Sapphic strophes; a list of supplementary readings; vocabularies.
