LET US PRAY
November 1939 Chester B. Fisk.

by Robert French Leavens 'Ol. Eucalyptus Press, Mills College, California, p. 35. Privately printed.

This little volume is a collection of prayers, thirty-five in number, which have been used in the services of worship at Mills College, Oakland, California, where Mr. Leavens was chaplain for seven years. In an interesting and thought-provoking preface, the author describes his philosophy of worship. Here, too, he acknowledges his debt to the makers of prayers in all ages, whose phraseology he borrows occasionally, but it is clear that the freshness and power of these prayers comes rather from the richness of Mr. Leavens' many years in the ministry, seeking to make worship meaningful to those who looked to him for spiritual guidance. The language of the prayers themselves is moving yet dignified, notable as much for its economy of words as for its beauty of expression. Mr. Leavens is already widely and gratefully known for his anthology of inspirational literature, Great Companions. Let Us Pray will put leaders of public worship and practicers of private worship again in his debt if it can be made more available than in the present limited edition.
