Colonel Thornton Chase, Inf., AUS, 'll, well-known to many Dartmouth service men at the guiding genius of the "Dartmouth-at-Ft. Benning Club," has been awarded the Legion of Merit recently.
The citation reads in part: "For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service from 2 October 1941 to 24 November 1944. As Adjutant General, The Infantry School, Fort Benning, Georgia, Colonel Chase was responsible for the formulation of policies and supervision of the execution of administrative details pertaining to the personnel of the command as individuals, including officer candidates. He displayed unusual professional ability in welding comparatively inexperienced personnel into a coordinated, efficient group which was responsible for the proper execution of the complex and varied duties pertaining to his office. His energy, tact, infinite productive capacity, and meticulous attention to detail were of major importance in assuring orderly and efficient expansion of The Infantry School."
Colonel Chase was retired from active duty in January 1946.
