Give Shop Tools
August 1946

A COLLECTION of power tools and other shop equipment, formerly used to build America Cup defenders and other yachts in the famed Herreshoff Shipyard of Bristol, R. I., has been presented to the Dartmouth College Student Workshop by Carl W. Haffenreffer '30 and his brother, Rudolf F. Haffenreffer 3d '25, both of Bristol. The Haffenreffers owned and operated the internationally known shipyard which has recently been discontinued.

The tools presented to the College include 18 electric saws, planers, drills, sanders and shapers. Their addition to the equipment of the Student Workshop in Bissell Hall greatly enhances the facilities now offered to students, faculty members and others who there carry on an informal program of handicrafts under the direction of Virgil Poling. Small boats, which are always popular in the student-faculty building program, can henceforth be turned out with some of the power tools used to build Rainbow, Enterprise, and other famous sailing boats at the Haffenreffers' Herreshoff yard.
