As RELIEF FOR Captain Damon E. Cummings, USN, who retired from active Naval service on July 1, Captain Roger E. Nelson, USN, has reported to Hanover as Commanding Officer of the Dartmouth NROTC Unit. Captain Nelson, a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy in 1922, commanded a landing craft flotilla in the invasion of Sicily, helped organize the landing craft phase of the Normandy invasion, as well as for the crossing of the Rhine, served as commandant of the Naval Operations Base at Guam, and most recently was in foreign administrative work with the temporary rank of Commodore. He was awarded the Legion of Merit twice, the Bronze Star, and the Croix de Guerre.
During the summer term for veterans, a number of NROTC students, with inactive-duty status, are enrolled in naval science courses. The details of Dartmouth's postwar NROTC Unit wait upon Congressional action, but it is expected that with returning trainees and new additions from the freshmen and upperclassmen a Unit of approximately 250 men will exist on the campus next fall.
