179 th Year Opens
October 1947

DARTMOUTH WILL OPEN its 179th academic year October 3 with the largest enrollment in its history. With a freshman class of about 675, the total student body is expected to number 3,100, as compared with the 1946-47 total of 2,822.

Classes will begin immediately after Convocation in Webster Hall at which President Dickey will speak. The fall semester ends February 10.

Of the entering class, only 69 are war veterans. The majority of upperclassmen will still be veterans, with approximately 100 returning to College for the first time since their discharge.

Approximately 275 married students will be housed in Sachem Village, Wigwam Circle and South Fayerweather Hall, the only dormitory now being used for this purpose. Middle Fayerweather was returned to a single men's dormitory status this summer.

Although the campus and off-campus facilities will be taxed above normal, a joint College-Community Committee has made efforts this summer to anticipate problems and devise solutions in advance.
