By Prof.Robert E. Riegel (Dartmouth) and HelenHaugh. Scribner's, 1947, 852 pp., #2.92.
"Suggest the name of a good one-volume history of the United States—one that is readable, reliable and complete." This request comes fairly often from busy Dartmouth men who try to be good citizens.
United States of America by Riegel and Haugh is quite possibly the answer. It gives the whole story from Christopher Columbus to Harry S. Truman. It blends the economic and social changes with the political events. There are scores of maps and pictures to vivify the narrative. There are good book lists, including fiction and biographies, for the use of readers whose interest is aroused.
The fact that the volume is designed primarily for high-school students is perhaps an advantage. At least it assures the absence of intricate, academic terminology. It means that the story is depicted simply in primary colors. The senior author, Professor Riegel, has been a Dartmouth teacher for a quarter century. He writes as he teaches, with knowledge, honesty and enthusiasm, in order that Americans may come to understand America.
