Clarence Tower of Niagara Falls boasts of a big family with four grand-children, all girls.... Tillie and Herm Whitmore have announced the engagement of daughter Jean. Bill Montgomery, Kansas City, says "just finished second year here—second hottest summer on record. Daughter Maria graduated from Wheaton, and Ferol is senior at Rochester U. Territa is at Sunset Hills School in Kansas City. You can see that Eva and I are getting along with our assignments bringing up girls.... from good old Al Zulick "nothing special to write about, so I bit my dog Herman today just for the hell of it, on account they say that's news. Herman is our rug spotter since '20, and not one with a handle— rewolwer, remember him? Old one minus one—See Gus.".... Sandy (John W. W.) Sanborn of Sioux City, la., and much beloved by the class and the college, passed away on October 1. Sandy was quiet and loved the great outdoors of Hanover, the Outing Club hikes and cabin trails. He had many devoted friends in the class and the college and will be sadly missed. See In Memoriam.
Warehouse man Larry Pope. Washington, D. C., enjoyed showing New England this fall to his new wife Mary, especially sin'ce Mary thinks her State of Oregon has the cream of mountain scenery— 'twas the first time Larry has seen Hanover in twenty years—he and Mary promise to be there again six months hence at our 30th in June '48. .... A card from Los Angeles, signed "Clarence" leads us to believe our own Judge Clarence Opper was traveling out that way this summer. High School principal (Framingham, Mass.) Mayo Magoon says "son Tom graduated in February '47 and had teaching fellowship at Colgate and was appointed instructor there for current year. Son Bruce, now sophomore at D, was freshman goalie on hockey team last year (like the old man) played that position in final varsity game with Yale."
Al Rzce's son is at Colgate this year. A 1 reported seeing Fat Hardy in Detroit and Bill Bemis in Cleveland. Remember, Al, to bring Marjorie to next year's Pomonok party—and certainly to Hanover next June only six months away. Missed at the Pomonok party were Marion and Frank Clahane, good friends of Roy and Chris Toner. Anybody hearing of industrial organizations wanting a personnel manager to handle industrial relations, accident and fire prevention, as a safety man, get in touch with Russ Smith Doc Rolf Sy verts enis helping the drive for an expanded Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover (Doc's on the beam says Dan Shea.) .... visiting last summer at Wentworth-by-the-Sea were Jake Bingham, AlGottschaldt, Phil Sanderson and Hort Chandler..... Bill Colby attended the annual Bar Association in Cleveland John Davis (Don's son) won a high award at summer camp. Phil Sanderson and Walt Willand attended Divine services in Maine and heard Rev. Don Aldrich 'l7 Much of this welcome news comes from our own Jake Bingham, who is Asst. State Chairman of the Natl. Foundation for Infantile Paralysis
The Boston papers of November 2 carried pictures of pretty Susan Shirley, whose engagement was announced by Priscilla and Tom at -a lovely party given at their Waban (near Brae Burn Country Club) home. The lucky guy was Jim Barrie, an Amherst senior, whose fraternity brothers joined in singing many college songs at the party
DECEMBER 31, 1947 IS THE BEST CHANCE '18ERS WILL HAVE TO MAKE A SUBSTANTIAL GIFT TO THE CLASS MEMORIAL FUND WITH UNCLE SAM SHARING A LARGE PART OF THE GIFT. Objective of the '18 class in six more months (the 30th Reunion June 1948) is 140,000. Now it stands about $26,000. With a surtax net income of $12,000 or better, one could give $1,000 of securities to '18's Memorial Fund which perhaps cost $40 years ago, get credit for $1,000 gift to Dartmouth and actually make money with the saving in taxes effected through the gift.
Secure, we thought, was proud Tommie Groves with the youngest baby born October 31. Mabel and Marsh Leavitt became proud parents of a six and a half pound boy. Wonderful, Marsh! What's his name?
It's coming, it's here—the 1918 ROAR. Thank you, Al Gottschaldt, for the work you have put in on that Minetia and Syl Morey were in Hanover visiting son Clayton, while D. and Columbia were tangling in N. Y. City—both had a lovely time at Buck Hills, their annual trip when the leaves are turning.... from Doc Ed McDowell, Plattsburgh, N. Y.: "I talked to John Sanborn from Lincoln, Nebraska, about three days before he died, and though he sounded rather glum said he was feeling quite well, following a recent operation at the Mayo Clinic for high blood pressure. Recently while passing through Ulster Park, I stopped to see Monk Cameron, who unfortunately was out electioneering. He is running for Supervisor on the good old Republican ticket. My boy Dave '46, graduate of Annapolis last June, is now on a destroyer in the Mediterranean" .... from Mel Southwick: "back again in Shanghai .... wife and three youngest daughters also here, eldest daughter graduated from Wheaton 6/8/47 and married 7/12/47 at Wheaton Chapel, Shanghai a veritable madhouse; whiskey $12,000,000 per bottle. Reunion next year—doubtful." ....
At the Inn in October were Eddie Ferguson, Dorothy and Charlie McCarthy, Mabel and Clarence Tower, Barbara and Harvey Hood, DickHolton and Dan Shea, Duke Du Sossoit and Tommy O'Connell Les Merrill sent in a new address of room 1406, 25 W. 43rd St., New York, and a resident of suite 815, 30 Bay. State Road, Boston, Mass., occupation—public relations and finance Bronson Tucker reports himself Dist. Mgr. of a cotton company in New Bedford, Mass. .... Dick White reports 100% recovery from his 1946 set back and forecasts a big Washington delegation to '18's 30th next June (think of it!!! —only six more months).
Skippy Stoddard (George's son) made a quick decision after arriving at Columbia (N. Y.) School of Journalism. He gave up the course and headed out for Denver, the ranch country and the timber land, to meet old cronies from Hanover and to make surveys of several industries in an effort to decide what he wants to take up. George was headed for the coast shortly afterward. With a touch of traquilla, and maybe a few tortillas, Pat and George Stoddard can show you the lovely colored pictures of their trip to Mexico and Cuba $1,000 given now to '18's Memorial Fund before 12/31 /47 may cost you less than half of that—that's the same as giving the college $20,000, for subsequent classes will sweat it out, each trying to do better than the former Shorty (Leon V.) Alden, Middleboro, Mass., has been with Dow-Jones in Boston. For cute jingles and jangles for '18's Roar, we suggest the amusing skill and poetry of Shorty Alden. Come to '18's Yuletide Cheer Dinner, N. Y. City, Dec. 17, "D" Club. Jan. 14, Bowling or breeze shooting.
Big week-end of Oct. 12—Pennsylvania game at Hanover. Says Tommy Bryant "while my Pixy was taking pictures, Stump Barr and I were trying to out-guess the Quarterbacks, with the help of his wife and Charlie McCarthy and his lad.
Bill Christgau shuffled around the seats between halves and spotted A1 Gottschaldt and below we could see the pate of Harvey Hood. Before the game we ran into Dick Holton and Doc Syvertsen. At close of game, we overtook Justice AmosBlandin (and wife Alberta) who looks so much the part of his honored position that GeneMarkey better cast him in Hollywood when next his script calls for such a splendid character. Highlights of my trip to the north country, were first seeing my Patty installed at Skidmore under Prexy Henry T. Moore who use to head up Dartmouth psychology when we were in Hanover—and next on overnight stay with Lymie Poole. Busted into Lymie and his brother at 11 No. Pearl St., Albany, to find phones ringing and typewriters shooting out policies and settling claims. Lymie looked as hard as nails and as tanned as a life guard and little wonder because he and his Margie are out on 200 or 300 acres beyond Nassau Village, where they are busy with one of the attractive modernized—ye old time houses. It was a surprise and a delight to watch Lymie caring for a half dozen porkers, a flock of chicks sprinkled with a few pouter pigeons and to help him dole out the mash to a Springer Spaniel and a half dozen of the prettiest pups you'd want to see. If you New Yorkers want to observe or participate in the glow of an atmosphere of "mine" host and hostess just finagle some of Margie's fried chicken and Lymie's cocktail shaker. We fellows who live in or near the big cities may think we have the life, but after that overnight trip to the Lymie Pooles, I'm all envious. They are grand folks!"
Parts of Bill Christgau's letter about theOct. 12 weekend in Hanover—

One of the top buyers at Macy's formerly, Mrs. Rosenfeld now buys $2 million worth of women's clothing for Sak's Sth Ave. and young Bill Rosenfeld, living in Hitchcock (across the corridor from young Bill Christgau), promises that in the future his dad and his stepmother, about whom he is most enthusiastic, will certainly be there
From Stew Teaze: "have been back from Tokyo since Feb., and as far as I can foresee, am now retired (lucky guy) whether I continue to make my home here—Washington, D. C. or California (La Jolla has always been my favorite spot to furlough in)—depends somewhat on the activities of Bob, my son, and Junior at "D.", and my daughter Karen. .... Was present at Washington dinner on Dartmouth night and met such old timers as Dick White, Larry Pope, Whit McCoy, GeorgeHull and Ray Smith Among his many assignments, our Lester P. Granger is on the committee investigating Hampton Institute. From AI Sibbernsen: "who wangled that picture out of Life?—l'll sue—misuse and abuse of copyrighted features—you refer to how greatly impressed Bob Fish was with SenatorWherry from Colorado—send him back to Arizona, please, he is out of this world, Wherry from Nebraska, Pawnee City, if you please. Campbell and his gang are not that good." Delighted were all his friends to find Lewis Lee's picture in the Times of Oct. 25—"appointed Ass't to the President of the Licensed Beverage Industries, Inc." ....
