Captain Arthur H. Bearing '14 achieved the comparative ozone of Naval flag rank recently when he was promoted to Rear Admiral in the Medical Corps of the Navy. The new admiral is medical officer in command of the U. S. Naval Hospital, Oakland, California, and he assumed his command there in January 1944 after two years of duty in the South Pacific on the staffs of Admirals Ghormley and Halsey.
As one of the senior captains in the Navy, Admiral Dearing has had a long and varied career, which has gained for him the reputation of being one of the Navy's outstanding surgeons. He entered the Navy in 1917 and served as medical officer aboard a transport in World War I. Since that time his assignments have included duty in Guam, Nicaragua, naval hospitals in Chelsea, Maryland and New London, Conn., and aboard the USS Relief and the USS California. He received the Medal of Merit with Silver Star from the Government of Nicaragua for his work during the Second Nicaraguan Rebellion in 1927-29, and was awarded two commendations and the Legion of Merit during World War 11. In addition to his wife, Venita, Admiral Dearing's family includes their three children, Frances 20, Arthur 18, and Judith 11.
