The award of an R. Melville Cramer Fellowship of $1,000 to John H. Copenhaver Jr. '46 of Des Moines, lowa, for graduate study in zoology was announced last month by President Dickey. Copenhaver, who received his Dartmouth degree last year, is now doing graduate work at the University of Wisconsin. One half of his fellowship will apply to the present academic year, and the other half to next year.
Copenhaver served as a teaching assistant in zoology at Dartmouth this past summer term. A ranking student in premedical studies, he first came to the College as a member of the Navy V-12 Unit, after active naval duty as a radioman second class, and then enrolled as a civilian to complete the undergraduate course. His preparatory schooling was obtained in Charles City, lowa, where he graduated from high school in 1940.
The R. Melville Cramer Foundation on which the Dartmouth fellowships are based was created by the late Dr. R. Melville Cramer '77 of New York City. Awards, usually of $1,000 each, are granted by the President to Dartmouth graduates and others who have shown unusual ability in genetics or in original laboratory investigation.
