THE ALUMNI MAGAZINE'S program of presenting the authoritative views of Dartmouth men on important public issues is continued this month with the second installment in the new series on Public Opinion ina Democracy. Articles on the freedom and influence of the Press have been written by three of Dartmouth's top-ranking journalists: Carl D. Groat '11, editor of The CincinnatiPost; Claude A. Jagger '24, Associated Press executive; and A. J. Liebling '24, former war correspondent and member of The NewYorker staff. Their views, under the general title The Role of the Press, start on Page 11.
Stanley B. Jones '18, of the Young and Rubicam advertising agency in New York, continues his sprightly series on the background of past benefactions to Dartmouth College—a field that offers surprisingly interesting reading, the way Mr. Jones handles it. This month's installment about Johnny Johnson '66 will be found on Page 21.

The Cover
The combination of a full moon behind Dartmouth Hall and ice-coated trees, following a freezing rain, was too much to be resisted by our staff photographer, Adrian Bouchard, who caught the striking earlyevening view on this month's cover.
