1947 Fund Reaches $185,000
June 1947

THE 1947 ALUMNI F UND, off to a later start by ten days than last year's recordbreaking campaign, was running fairly close to the 1946 figures of comparable date as this issue went to press. As of May 21, the dollar total of the current campaign was $185,000, contributed by 6,050 givers. These totals, as the Class Agents and the Fund Office marshal their forces for the June stretch drive, show the 1947 Fund running approximately $20,000 behind the 1946 effort in cash but they show a lag of only 100 in the contributors column, despite the later start.

With special stress being placed on increased participation this year, the strong showing to date in number of contributors is a highly significant and encouraging sign. In some classes the dollar totals are also high, with seven classes reported beyond their objectives on May 17. They are led by 1889 with 178% and 1890 with 159%. The other classes, in order, are: 1901 with 149%, 1894 with 145%, 1897 with 145%, 1892 with 124%, and 1887 with 105%. The Class of 1901, with $5,011, led all others in total cash.

The Alumni Council Committee's second mailing piece, "Capacities for Greatness," went into the mails late in April, and a third mailing is contemplated for early June. In the April mailing, the challenge to Dartmouth and her alumni was ably expressed in the final paragraph which read, in part, "In men and plant Dartmouth has the capacities for greatness built by the common devotion of her sons over many years. It is for us to hold, use and expand those capacities, matching our deeds today against the achievements of the past and the demands of the future."

Although close contests are being waged in all six Green Derby races, 1901, headed by Class Agent Richard Ward, and 1941, headed by Class Agent Lewis K. Johnstone, are farthest ahead of their neighboring competitors. Following are the leaders as reported on May 17: Group I (1898-1907)-1901; Group II (1908-1917)—1914, led by John F. Conners; Group III (1918-1926)—1919, led by Edward E. Martin; Group IV (i927-1935)-19Si, led bY Ernest H. Moore; Group V (1936-1943)—1941, led by Lewis K. Johnstone; and the Little Green Derby (1944-1948)—1944, led by Homer G. Bogart.
