Early last month the relatively new firm of E. H. and M. K. Hunter, Hanover architects were presented with the 1946 ProgressiveArchitecture Award at a banquet in New York for the design of the Dewey Corporation Showroom and Restaurant at Quechee, Vermont. The Hunters building tied for the award in the non-residential class with the school in San Carlos, Calif., by Ernest Rump.
The "E. H." of the Hunter firm represents Edgar H. (Ted) Hunter '3B, one-time member of the greatest Dartmouth ski squad ever assembled, a contemporary of (and sometimes victor over) the great Dick Durrance '39., and a member of the 1936 Olympic and the 1937 Pan American ski teams. M. K. Hunter is Peg, his attractive and capable wife, a graduate of Harvard's Graduate School of Architecture, as is Ted.
Judgement for the award which is annually presented by the magazine "to the architect of the building constructed during the year in the United States, which best exemplifies sound progress in design," was based on "demonstrable progress in fitness, strength, beauty and purpose."
The Hunters' winning design, which was built in 1946, is located on Vermont Highway No. 4, at the edge of Quechee Gorge. The building is constructed largely of local materials, and in addition to native stone and plywood, features a south wall of plate glass which, is shaded in summer by deep roof overhangs. In winter, the lower altitude of the sun allows its light to enter and help heat the building. Heating is of the radiant type, with pipe coils imbedded in the concrete floor slab on the ground. In the showroom, which is now open, there is a native stone fireplace with circular benches around it. The restaurant, which opened on May 30, has an outside flagstone dining terrace. The Hunters were commissioned to design the building by William T. Dewey '33, general manager of the A. G. Dewey Co.
Moving to Hanover in the fall of 1945, the Hunters hung out their shingle in offices in the Musgrove Building. With Mr. Hunter a part-time instructor in art on the Dartmouth College faculty, the Hunter family now has a large Dartmouth-Hanover representation Edgar H. Sr. '01 is a well-known local contractor and his other son. Dr. Ralph W. '31 is Instructor in Medicine in the Medical School and Acting Medical Director of the College.
